My girlfriend told me that while you can still get a DUI on a bicycle, you can't on a unicycle because it only has one wheel. One problem though: Although I haven't tried, I highly doubt I can ride a unicycle while sober, let a lone after having a few.

Thank you Old Timer -- it's always best to know from people who will actually be directly impacted. Like you note, any changes will cost $$$. In general I'm a fan of traffic calming, but in Santa Cruz there really is no place else for traffic to go -- Mission is already beyond capacity, and there's no where else for traffic now on King to go. I'm sure also that residents on King don't want to give up their parking, since parking is also already so limited in Santa Cruz.

I live on king, and I'm an avis cyclist, and none of these options are good.

Parking is already a big problem. Taking parking won't help. The first option means I would have to cross king with kids and groceries, or walk a block.

Widening the street by taking the medians will expose pedestrians to greater risk and remove trees that make the street nice. Are you going to move the telephone poles?
bring your wallet...

I would be in favor of moving traffic off of king as in option two, but then the side street neighbors get burned.

Most of all, king is safe to ride right now. What I need is a safe, quick way to get downtown or to the eastside.

This is sort of a bridge to nowhere.

Actually, I might be thrilled to learn that someone else nearby is so passionate about high-speed passenger rail they're willing to ride a bike with a bumper sticker permanently encrusted to the frame that proclaims this.

Thanks for the shout. Because I may need to be in many different places in one day... doing a number of tasks... cycling can be hard for a Realtor. However, I found that I can ride to do showings at my listings (I ask my clients if this is acceptable) and ride with my buyer clients who are into it.

Additionally, if I want to work in my office on a slow appointment day (rather than home because my kid is going nuts) the commute is easy.

I could probably reduce my driving by 30% to 50%.

Where I ride we don't have bicycle lanes and we do ride in traffic with fast moving cars.
I ride in Texas on country roads to avoid traffic.

In the last 2 months I have read about 4 bicyclists being killed because they where hit by cars from the rear. I myself would rather have a bike lane than constantly be riding along with them. At least with a bike lane you have the option.

On single lane roads with cars and large dirt hauling trucks whizzing by at 70MPH you can nearly be thrown off the road just from the wind of the vehicle. The are merely 1-2 feet from your shoulder. We here want shoulders and bike lanes. Fighting against them seems like a disservice to the bicycle community; In my opinion.

...fritz...i'm assuming points A & B on that map allow access to king st. through the use of traffic lights but i wonder about the safety of those ingress & egress points...

...using & knowing the area as well as you do, what's your personal take on the situation ???...ie: what do you think would be safest reasonable situation & what would you prefer to see done ???...

...i ask, fritz, because while i'm familiar w/ the traffic & dangers of mission st., i'm not versed in the alternatives...

Presumably that weight/distance/fuel volume is once the train has finished accelerating for an optimally loaded engine. Not to knock rail, I think its a lot better when its available, but that figure seems somehow dishonest.

Around here they are busting people for BUI. You are technically as responsible as a driver. If you want the rights of a vehicle, you have to take the responsibilities. That being sad, in my drinking days I used to enjoy the challenges of navigating my fixed gear through the darkened streets after an evening drinking without counting.

June 23, 2008 Bikes Belong Awards Five REI/Bicycle Friendly Community Grants Boulder, CO—June 23, 2008 Five designated and aspiring Bicycle Friendly Communities will receive funds to help them make bicycling more safe, convenient, and appealing places to ride. These grants, designed to pinpoint specific needs outlined by each community in their Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) application, help pay for bike plans, technical assistance, pilot projects, and innovative cycling initiatives. This grant program is administered by the Bikes Belong Foundation in partnership with the League of American Bicyclists. It is made possible by the generous support of Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI). Colorado Springs, Colorado The City of Colorado Springs, a silver-level BFC, will receive $15,000 to conduct a community survey that will help determine key bicycling needs and attitudes in the city. The results will help city planners develop a detailed Bicycling Encouragement Plan for implementation in 2009. Madison, Wisconsin The City of Madison, a gold-level BFC, will use their $15,000 award to conduct a similar initiative. Their survey results will help the city rank and prioritize bike projects in their Platinum Plan, helping them advance toward their ambitious goal of "making Madison the best place in the country to bicycle." New Haven, Connecticut The City of New Haven received honorable mention in the last BFC round. Their $10,000 grant will help develop and implement a plan to improve bike safety, access, and parking in downtown New Haven, particularly targeting the Union Station area. This is the first step in their vision of a fully equipped bike station at the transit center. Flint, Michigan The Safe and Active Flint Coalition will receive $5,000 to improve bike safety and awareness through a Sharrow program. Flint received honorable mention in the last BFC round. They identified Sharrows—pavement markings encouraging cars and bicycles to share the road—as key to marking the first designated bike routes in the city. New Orleans, Louisiana The Metro Bicycle Coalition will receive $5,000 to help launch New Orleans' first bicycle event since Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in 2005. The community ride will promote bicycling and bike commuting while continuing to build momentum for bike facilities in the Unified New Orleans plan—a city-wide post-Katrina planning process. New Orleans received honorable mention in the last BFC round for its commitment to including bicycling in its infrastructure improvements. About the REI/BFC Grant Program and Partners The REI Bicycle Friendly Communities Grant Program is a collaborative effort of REI, the Bikes Belong Foundation, and the League of American Bicyclists. Advocacy organizations and city planning departments in League-designated Bicycle Friendly Communities are invited to apply for funding that will help them reach specific BFC goals. The grants provide seed money for technical assistance and evaluation, bicycle master plans, infrastructure improvements, and innovative pilot projects and programs. The Bicycle Friendly Community program was developed by the League of American Bicyclists to inspire city governments to create safe, appealing bicycle routes and facilities as well programs that encourage people of all ages to ride bikes for transportation and recreation. Currently, there are 84 communities across the country designated with bronze, silver, gold, or platinum BFC awards. The League's BFC staff provides applicants with resources and technical assistance, and offers workshops and site visits for communities that want to develop and energize their efforts to become more bicycle friendly. Bikes Belong has been a key supporter of this important program since 2001. REI—a national outdoor retail co-op dedicated to inspiring, educating, and outfitting its members and the community for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship—sponsors this important grant program. REI is committed to promoting environmental stewardship and increasing access to outdoor recreation through volunteerism, gear donations, and financial contributions. For 11 consecutive years, REI has been recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of "100 Best Companies to Work for in America." The company ranks 34th overall on the 2008 list. Bikes Belong is the U.S. bicycle industry organization dedicated to putting more people on bicycles more often. I ride my bike to bars as well--counteracts some of the effects of beer to get some exercise, and I'm thrilled to not be in a car after drinking. Wish New Orleans drivers also chose to stay off the road after drinking...*That* is what makes bike riding after dark dangerous around these parts.
