[Cyclelicious] New comment on Road rash repair kit.
True that about hyrdocolloids -- there's no comparison between that and bandages.
After a bad spill I've cleaned up using my water bottle for the initial flushing.

If you look at the contents of the Brave Soldier Crash Pak, it is completely different. The Crash Pak supplies Band Aids and the Repair Kit heals with hydrocolloids. Hydrocolloids are what the pros use.

Ironically, that's part of why you're safer. The reverse is people in SUVs who think they're totally safe and end up lying sideways in a ditch during a light snowfall.

fixedorbroken, you are a jackass!
Just how is it "so obvious" that Landis cheated?
The lab's behavior was beyond terrible. Nothing it says about Landis' samples should be trusted. Nothing at all.
When someone is to be convicted of doping, people like dr. logan, ultrarob, and myself want proof. All we have in this case is the word of an unethical, ill-run lab and the win-at-all-costs anti-doping authorities.

Twenty seven stages? That's longer than any of the Grand Tours. The UCI will never approve it, so the pro teams won't do it.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bicycling and wealth.
I've been through El Paso a few times and I was really surprised to read that tidbit about El Paso's resolution to become the least car-dependent city in the USA.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bicycling and wealth.
El Paso is my home town (I live 50 miles away in Las Cruces) and it has a strong car culture. They added bike lanes near my old house and the residents went into a frenzy about how they were wasting space and needed to be removed. Maybe they were right. Nobody seems to use them.
It is unfortunate, but, from my biased point of view, this part of the country thinks that cars are the only way to get around and the cities were designed as such. When I do commute on my bike, I don't feel very safe.

I think it runs deeper philosophically; when people are invulnerable, they become unaware of the harm they do to others. WOrks on an individual and a group basis.
Fahrenheit 451's descriptions of the highways were also eerily accurate.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on How Wars Are Won: Book review.
Keegan's History of Warfare is good, but it does get to be boggy going at times. All you need to know about Clausewitz:
War, on the one hand, is "a continuation of politics by other means." Governments choose to go to war to accomplish specific political ends. However, war is unpredictable, not merely in its outcome, but also in the fact that it tends to get out of control. In Clausewitz's formulation, war tends toward total war. It's hard to have a small war, in short, because the stakes for the loser are so high.
Clausewitz's observations on total war are a little less apropos now that superpowers are able to extend power over seas so that a defeat or pullout doesn't directly harm the superpower, the nations on which they're exerting their power still fight back with everything they've got.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Floyd Landis Guilty - Loses 2006 Tour de France Ti....
I've long believed that doping is common in cycling and also in other sports. However just because riders are doping doesn't mean that the odds should be stacked against them in doping cases. USADA's 35-0 record to me is more about rules that assure they win cases than it is that they had solid cases. To me the sloppiness of the lab is worse than Landis doping if that was really the case. They didn't prove it to me.

You make the claim that the Transportation Secretary blamed cyclists
for the I-35 bridge collapse. Can you back that statement up? You link
to statements she made about funding of bike facilities, statements
that have been taken out of context, in my opinion. But blaming
cyclists for the I-35 bridge disaster? Are you sure that's what she
said?

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Kids tandem bicycle.
Last year at Interbike, Brown Cycles rode this around at the OutDoor Demo with a muppet in the front seat. Very cool...since it lets the kid thing he/she is steering. Probably gives them more motivation to keep pedaling too.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Mass market fixed gear bike.
Right now our bike coop ( www.thebikeproject.org ) is sort of trying to figure out whether discount store bicycles are worth working on or not. We've got both the poor-folks contingent and the very-temporarily and/or not-very-poor student contingent here that are looking for something cheaper than the bike shops, so it will be interesting to see which way the wind blows. One proposal has been to turn the discount bikes into fixies. (Local constabularies seem to be willing to send the coop their abandoned/confiscated bicycles after the wait period, most of which are "junk.")

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Mass market fixed gear bike.
You're right, Sue. I've long recognized that Latinos probably make up the majority of cyclists in America; I got the Denver area Bike To Work team to begin Spanish-language outreach, and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition is now thinking about Spanish language outreach after I suggested it. I have the print edition of Bicycling -- it's a good article.
Most Latinos, however, don't ride fixed gear bikes. Many seem to ride discount store bikes or ancient 10-speeds recycled via the perpetual garage sales in Latino neighborhoods. The bike-riding Latinos I talk with view cycling as a poor-person activity and plan to buy a car ASAP because that's what you do when you have money.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Mass market fixed gear bike.
Sounds like he's one of the "invisible riders" liek Bicycling magazine's article described (almost made3 me subscribe, I tell ya)... CICLE snagged it at http://www.cicle.org/cicle_content/pivot/entry.php?id=809 tho' sometimes linking doesn't work (but if you google cicle and then do "invisible" search on their site, and look for "L.A.'s invisible riders" you'll find the article).
It's worth reading regular-like for that perspective. When it came out it was discussed and some people did some eyerolling about how those eople would buy cars if theyy could - which is still viewing it through "those people" lenses because my guess is there isn't a lot of time wasted on thinking "if I could, I'd get a car" (especially if licenses would have their own legal problems).
Fixies just kinda befuddle me. Since I can only engage my brain in one thing at a time, one-ness with a machine is an impossible dream...

I did click through rather than assume this was yet another endorphin-charged "you don't know bliss!!" post... and it isn't.
Is there a way to call this "freedom" (the freedom to drive where & when you want... at the expense of *other* peoples' lives and freedoms as well as your own) what it is... without it being a *them* thing?
So many of them are us.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bicycle risks and safety.
I do feel more vulnerable on my bike but I think how someone rides makes a big difference in safety. I won't ride with even one earpiece as I think it reduces awareness of what's going on.
Route choice also makes a big difference although roads that seem safe can lull me into not paying attention. I have quit doing one of my favortie 200 mile rides from Colorado Springs to Glenwood Springs because of worries about narrow roads and lots of high speed traffic. I've replaced it with a ride to Avon that's 190 miles and avoids the busiest section of the ride to Glenwood.

I've expanded my Bicycle racing feeds section over on my blog so it includes more items about Tour of Missouri.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Louisiana town seeks to ban bicycles.
Howdy--
Wow, that's unbelievable. Most places in the country are building skateparks to solve the fountain skating issue, once they get past their innate intolerance toward kids who don't dig ball sports. It seems hard to believe the ordinance doesn't conflict with state laws regarding bicycles. Thanks for the clarification, and I loved Biking in the Bible Belt.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Kayak to work.
Thanks for the education. So in the UK a canoe is kind of a broad term, and you can narrow it down to kayak or Canadian canoe, right?
Posted by Fritz to Cyclelicious at 9/10/2007 11:14:00 AM
[Cyclelicious] New comment on Kayak to work.
art's nearly right. In UK usage one you kneel in and use a single ended paddle is a Canadian canoe, one you sit in (or on) and use a double ended paddle is a kayak, and both kayaks and Canadian canoes are canoes.
Then there are sailing canoes....

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Louisiana town seeks to ban bicycles.
Howdy--
I'm going to assume it's just a lousy piece of reporting--it's certainly vague on the details of the ordinance. I'll bet the ban is on sidewalk riding, which is common. While it does raise issues for kids, especially those too small to ride safely in traffic, an adult loaded with shopping bags hanging off the handlebars of his huffy is a hazard to pedestrians. This ordinance could be an opportunity for advocates to educate drivers and rider about their right to use the road.
Then again, this is the deep south, and I have seen Easy Rider...

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Team Slipstream jersey design contest.
Even though I use a Mac and can't test it, their design toolkit should work on PC's too. You just need the right design software to open the files. Looks like they provide each file in a few formats (eps, ai, jpg or pdf) to work with either Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop type programs. All should be OS-neutral.
This seems like a fun contest.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Kayak to work.
there was a Washington Post article a few weeks back about a man who mixes rowing and cycling as his commute to work
there is not enough time in the day to consider such things for me
but I have been thinking
maybe I should hook my computer up to some sort of generator that is powered by a stationary bicycle
thus forcing me to exercise while I blog
that may help me midsection!

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bike lane passing lane.
I often think about why we will never reach the same level of acceptance of the bicycle in our culture as lets say... china or copenhagen
part of the issue is that cyclists are looking for exercise in their commute
instead of just plugging along
the great collections of one speed bikes move at roughly the same speed
no one looking to break a sweat
no one training for anything
that is part of what makes it work
in our US culture there is such a wide variety of riding styles that a mass of cyclists can be a dangerous thing
this passing lane is a good idea

RE: Beverly Hills & CA law
The law states that the bike rider must stay as close to the curb as possible unless...
No mention is made about a parking lane and parked vehicles. Are cyclists suppose to weave around parked cars in order to stay close to the curb?
The same thing happened to me last weekend when riding with my young sons but the officer did not take a position on the matter.
