[Cyclelicious] New comment on New bicycle laws for 2008.

Roger has left a new comment on your post "New bicycle laws for 2008":

Actually, the revised Illinois law says practicable and safe. For years, the Illinois statute said as far right as practicable. The words "and safe" were added to the statute to provide exceptions and provide flexibility, according to the League of Illinois Bicyclists.

Those ol' deisel Benzs are still widely used throughout Europe, for good reasons.

Speaking of fuel consumpton, the closure of highway 64 in St Louis is expected to cause a sharp increase in local fuel demand. One engineer estimates that about $582 million in additional oil will be consumed in the next two years due to the extra traffic, construction delays and additional mileage, etc.

Merry Christmas! It's definitely a white Christmas here in Maine, even with the rain we received earlier this week. It washed some of the snow away, but not all. If I didn't have to spend 4 hours in the car traveling to Christmas dinner (2 hours each way) I actually would have ventured out on the bike today for an enjoyable ride - 40 degrees and sunny. Not bad for a Christmas day ride, if it had happened.

I understand, really, I do. Any excuse to post a photo of an attractive, partially clad woman should not be denied! Too bad she doesn't have some equally attractive shoes. One cannot have everything, can one?

Seriously, though, the cycling industry moved away from wooden components probably before the Second World War. I read somewhere that wood rims were the last to go, mainly because they offered an impalement hazard in a crash when the rims splintered.

For that reason, I'd be wary of wood handlebars. But then again, it's my destiny to break stuff.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Caltrans response to questions about bicycle detec....

Bob Shanteau has left a new comment on your post "Caltrans response to questions about bicycle detec...":

Earlier this year the California legislature passed and the governor signed AB 1581, which says in part:

Upon the first placement of a traffic-actuated signal or replacement of the loop detector of a traffic-actuated signal, the signal would have to be installed and maintained, to the extent feasible and in conformance with professional engineering practices, so as to detect lawful bicycle or motorcycle traffic on the roadway. Cities and counties would not be required to comply with those requirements until the Department of Transportation has established uniform standards, specifications, and guidelines for the detection of bicycles and motorcycles by traffic-actuated signals and related signal timing.

Almost all traffic actuated signals in California, indeed all over the world, use inductive loops to detect vehicles. Inductive loops are notorious for not detecting bicycles. And if you are not detected, then you don't get a green light.

If you want to know more about inductive loops and bicycle detection, see my presentation to Caltrans:

http://www.cyclelicio.us/files/BicycleLoops.pdf

Let me know if you need more information.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on California Christmas.

Fritz has left a new comment on your post "California Christmas":

Yeah, right about the wheelies. All the weight is on the rear wheel, so it actually takes effort to avoid wheelies on this bike. I rode a wheelie down the length of my sidewalk last night on this bike.

The other interesting sticker is the one that instructs riders to apply the rear brake before the front. I don't understand that caution because the geometry guarantees you won't endover on this bike.

It's a little skittish in the rain and slick conditions because of the unweighted front wheel -- I slid the front out a couple of times this morning on my commute.

I pointed to your initial thoughts from my review at CBB. The mechanical designers in the office are all agog about this bike. From a design perspective I'm interested in your real review when you get to it.

Bob's the engineer :-)

Quickly, though, Bob made recommended improvements to Caltrans standards for inductive loop detectors. Caltrans ignored/rejected those recommendations in favor of pushing for new technology.

Unfortunately, the video detectors are a lot more expensive than the old loop detectors. Bob can comment more, but I think the concern is that local governments will forgo making any changes at all if their only option is something that costs an order of magnitude (or more) than their existing installations.

Bob, can you clarify?

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Traffic lights and bicycles: The technical explana....

Bob Shanteau has left a new comment on your post "Traffic lights and bicycles: The technical explana...":

Brian suggested using a magnet to trip actuated traffic signals.

Sorry, but a loop detects conducting metal. They work like the metal detectors people use to find coins at the beach. Of course, a loop at a traffic actuated signal needs a larger piece of metal than a coin, but not more massive, such as the bottom of a car.

A piece of conducting metal causes an decrease in the inductance of the loop and therefore an increase in the resonant frequency of the oscillator circuit in the detector. Sorry, but there is no way that a permanent magnet can cause a change in the inductance of a loop in an oscillator circuit. Just ask any electrical engineer or physicist.

So you want to try a magnet anyway but can't tell when you have been detected by a loop at a signal? Buy a metal detector at your local outdoor store and see if it detects your magnet. I would be curious to learn what you find out.

If you really want to increase your chance of being detected at a traffic signal, then wrap several turns (the more turns the better) of insulated magnet wire (try Radio Shack) around your front wheel and splice the ends together, insulating the splice. You can use thin magnet wire (size does not matter) under the rim tape of a clincher rim with electrical tape around the splice. Then stop with your front wheel directly over the slot of a loop, if you can see it. If you cannot see the loop, then stop about 3 feet from the edge of a 12 foot travel lane. Or you can try asking your local friendly traffic engineer to paint a bicycle detector symbol over the loop slot.

If you cannot see the loop slots, do NOT stop in the middle of the lane!!! That is where most loops are LEAST sensitive to vertical pieces of metal such as a bicycle wheel. (There is an exception with figure-8 shape loops, but if you can't see the loop, how do you know what shape it is?)

I need to ride soon. The road are just so bad now. Snow, melt, freeze makes for very jagged tire puncturing riding conditions. More stuff tonight, but it's one of those, snow sleet rain combinations.

Holiday lighting is definitely on the adjenda for tomorrow though. Walgreens.... here I come.

David has left a new comment on your post "Shortened Tour of America announced":

The caps come off when there's not enough bar tape left over and tucked into the bars. If you do the wrapping yourself, leave a bit extra (though you'll probably end up less at the top of the bars) and if mechanics do it, you can take out a cap and wrap the part that goes into your bars with electrical tape.

Instead, I like to take corks from nice bottles of wine I have when traveling or with friends and use those instead.

You are dead on the money. Our economic basis has been the petro-dollar for decades. Schoolkids who were paying attention in the 1960s were being taught that oil was running out. I believe that walk score is cool, but nowadays more and more people prefer to drive cars. Homes are often located in an area where some establishments are easier to get to by car than on foot. I've recently found a type of service on drivescore which is called Drive Score. It shows a map of what establishments are in your neighborhood and calculates a Drive Score based on the number of places within a convenient driving distance. It doesn't mean that drive score is better than walk score – they are equal and both necessary in the modern world!

I just found the journal article (Chaplin, L. N. & John, D. R. "Growing up in a Material World: Age Differences in Materialism in Children and Adolescents." J. Consumer Res., vol. 34, p. 480), and it has absolutely nothing to do with unhappy Hummer drivers. So it grates on me a bit the research is being spun that way in the blogosphere. It looks like the researches were trying to show why materialism spikes among younger adolescents, and why restricting things like TV watching and corporate advertising in schools doesn't really address the root of the problem. The relationship between materialism and happiness in adults with respect to their vehicles is probably a far more complicated one, but the same general idea is probably there.

(Don't mind me, I needed a good excuse to try out Chicago Journals Online.)

The idea makes so much sense it should be just a matter of when and where. Nothing like hearing manufacturers offer you $5000+ bikes to try in the first minute of discussions for two full days like at Las Vegas.

My bus has a 2 bike rack and about half the time I'm the only bike. Maybe twice I have seen a cyclist waved off because the rack was full. I haven't really seen much ridership increase in the past few months, but as it gets colder I'll ride both ways on the bus, instead of commuting 15 miles home on the bike.

Slightly better link to the car crashes that held you up this morning.

(Almost wrote 'accident', but I don't believe in that word when associated with car crashes anymore...)

As for CALTRAIN - I don't usually see passenger train-cars more than 50% full - because each passenger typically takes up two or more seats. That's far from being anywhere near capacity. Time to rip out the other side of the cab car to make room for 32 more bikes!

I love making people grumble by asking them to move their bags so that I can sit near the luggage area and keep an eye on my folder...

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Why the winter bike commute is fun.

bother yam has left a new comment on your post "Why the winter bike commute is fun":

Here in Minneapolis, we're having a proper winter -- the first for some time. We've 3-4" of snow and more is supposed to come today. As a Northern people you need to make friends with winter and enjoy it or you'll go insane, and not in a good way. People who ski (downhill and XC), snowmobile and snowshoe look at me as if I'm insane when I ride my bike.

What? There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing...

Don't be afraid to shake Ol' Man Winter's hand -- and then twist it behind his back, drop him, put a knee between his shoulder blades and ride his hoary carcass down the hill. It's fun.

Oh, and I'm with warren t; I love the moniker "hard core."

I'm just too afraid to watch it...it's kind of a blur, but steephill is right, there's a reason I'm not in front of a camera...oy...I couldn't figure out where to look (at David or at the camera)...we should have practiced or something...oy...but I'm sure everyone else looked fine. Maybe someday I'll get up the nerve to watch it..after some spiked eggnog, of course. :)

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Why the winter bike commute is fun.

Jim has left a new comment on your post "Why the winter bike commute is fun":

It's been pouring rain like crazy here in Portland, OR. Started Saturday sometime and just kept going. Got my rain pants out this morning that I bought two months ago and hadn't needed. Yay! Don't like the look or price of booties so the water poured through the vents of my Specialized shoes. Boo! Put my socks in front of the portable heater I'd brought down to the office and they were toasty warm and dry. Yay! Walked out of the office and found my rear tire flat. Boo! A bike bag is on my Christmas list so I can carry tire wrenches, patches and a pump but in the meantime ... I just carry an EMT tool for tightening stuff.

Thank goodness that I could call the wife, have her pick me up so we could pick up child #1 and the bike trailer, then get child #2 and #3.

People were a lot tougher before cell phones.

This is going to be my first winter commuting. So far, it's been a mild winter and it's all been good. Ask me again in January, thou! gh.

Warren T has left a new comment on your post "Why the winter bike commute is fun":

To be serious about it for a moment, perhaps the biggest benefit I've had has been better health. I can't remember the last time I've had to take a sick day. Perhaps it is the fresh air. Maybe being outside in cold temperatures for an hour a day increases your resistance to sickness. I've got to imagine the sweating, running nose and dislodged "gunkies" that happen during the ride get some of the toxins out of your system...

My ego also likes all the comments about my being "hard core."

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Aftermarket bicycle chainguards.

Andy B from Jersey has left a new comment on your post "Aftermarket bicycle chainguards":

Just so you know chainguards only work well with bikes that have a fixed chainline. Hub geared bikes are fairly uncommon in the US (but getting more popular thank goodness) and henceforth so are chainguards. This is probably the reason why it is so hard to find after-market chainguards in the US. It doesn't help that most chainguard applications are proprietary to begin with.

Man, it's no wonder you guys are never in front of the camera. Seriously, despite the hairy legs and gratuitous plugs, it was good to put some faces to the blogs. In fact, I recognize some the faces from the media center at the show. We must have been like two ships in the dark.

Fyi, I've made that Spokesmen interbike interview segment my "Video Clip of the Day" on my home page.

i'm the "significant other" that seth talked about...my bike (a breezer uptown 8) is blogged here. i love this bike and i wish there were more bikes like this in the market. or at least more appreciative market for internal hubs.

as for panniers, the basil link is great-- i've been on lookout for stylish panniers. i'm not sure where you are located but there seems to be a US distributor of gazelle, called JollyBikes, and they sell accessories similiar to that of Basil (or maybe it's the same thing.

I think that they have the entire Basil pannier/bag/basket line, so if you see it in the Basil catalog, I bet Todd has it. clevercycles.com or 503.334.1560

BTW, Fritz, I have one of the Basil bag/panniers and it is really beautiful and beautifully made.

(Or maybe you should make a fieldtrip to PDX!)

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Breezer Villager.

Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Breezer Villager":

Sue, I'd previously linked to your other haikus already! Enclosed chains are good in the Midwest, but here along the California coastline rain is a rarity and we never have to deal with snow and the associated salt and grit. Thanks for that link to the Weather channel video, BTW.

I like the Electra Townie bikes too, Noah.

Wild, a pannier was the first thing Sara asked for :-) She was disappointed in the limited color selection at the bike shop, so I think I might get something from Basil (is there a US distributor? Clever Cycles, perhaps?)

$1,199 is the MSRP. We actually won this bike as a prize in the "Carbon Conscious Consumer" contest that some of you might recall a couple of months back. THanks so much for all of your support!

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Taking the lane: How it's done.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Taking the lane: How it's done":

that road in laguna is insane. while i am 100% supportive of bicyclists asserting their rights on the road, but that looked rather unnecessary. why not pick a slightly less busy road?

having grown up in orange county, i realize that most roads are huge and fast, but a lot of roads also have a bike lane or at least a shoulder.

vehiclar cycling is one thing, but planting yourself in the midst of SUVs piloted by cell-phone talking drivers going 50mph to prove a point is another. why should you believe, even for a second, that a car behind you is going to see you or give you a wide berth just because you're in the middle of the right lane? people still give me a foot or less when passing me, even when i plant my butt right down the middle of the lane.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Taking the lane: How it's done.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Taking the lane: How it's done":

Thanks for posting this link. I would like to address Anonymous, time stamped 11/30/2007 10:03:00 AM remarks:

> presentations ...

Excuse me where do you live? All vehicle operators are responsible to "exercise duty of care" to others on the road. A sound grounding in vehicular cycling help the cyclist know where and how to drive and anticipate, prevent others ignorance or irresponsibility!

> notice how each of these critical areas are labeled "under development".

How about looking at Richard Moeur's "Bicycle Facility Design" for an expanded looked.
http://tinyurl.com/ysgowg

> the group has a clear and obvious bias against separated bike lanes which can be very beneficial as proven around the world.

The presentations is are unfair, they clarifies the weakness of special facilities, i.e. bike lanes, whose benefits are dubious. My Local EMS service counted 19 bike accident in four years, over half (10) we're on a multi-use path (aka bike path). Thanks so much for bicycle friendly facility! A vehicular [educated] cyclist can adapt to any situation or road.

> presentations typically are from the perspective of an adult and ignore the needs of young children and older adults.

Young children need good role models [parents] to learn how ride a bike and I don't see any problems with older adults, except breaking old habits and disarming fears. Chris Quints' "A Kid's Eye View: Bicycle Safety for Parents from a Child's Perspective" featured on LAB Enjoy the Ride: Essential Bicycling Skills (DVD) http://tinyurl.com/29stpo
is quite good for parents of younger riders.

> very disappointing...

If you want a slower paced, less technical view, try "Cyclist's Eye View: Driving Your Bicycle in Traffic" also on Enjoy the Ride: Essential Bicycling Skills (DVD). While this information fails to fulfill your hopes or expectations I find it extremely informative and well done!
