[Cyclelicious] New comment on 2009 Bianchi Vigorelli - Steel is real.

GhostRider has left a new comment on your post "2009 Bianchi Vigorelli - Steel is real":

Well, yes, I'll give you that: the chrome is nice and makes the bike sleek and all, but how much cooler would it be to have a CELESTE Pista (or any other model, for that matter)?

It's one of, if not THE, most recognizable colors in the bicycling industry...yet I've noticed Bianchi is slowly stepping away from it. Heck, even some of their top of the line carbon wondermachines only show hints of celeste.

It's the purist in me -- as the original owner of a vintage celeste machine, I can be kind of snobby about Bianchis...chalk it up to the rants of a disgruntled commuter!

Mayor Gavin and the rest of SF's political establishiment should be deeply embarrassed that they've allowed a crank like Rob Anderson to put a stop to the city's bike network plan.

Just do the EIS already and start building out the bike network. Anderson's a nut job and a know-nothing.

The show was severely biased. Rob Anderson is notable only for filing a lawsuit to block a sensible public policy. He has no transportation experience or credentials. (Last week's Wall Street Journal article did a great job of portraying Anderson as the isolated eccentric.) Yet his remarks framed the entire conversation. Noah was valiant, but clearly on the defensive the entire program. And yes, the NPR reporter from Seattle was clearly unqualified to talk on this topic. They obviously picked him because of the recent Critical Mass incidents there. A laughable conversation. Bicycling deserves better than this.

Yeah, I listened. I was a little disappointed to be honest. Thanks for dropping by, Mr Anderson. You came across reasonably well, as did Noah Budnick.

Who was the guy from Seattle, anyway? Do you know?

Budnick's point about transportation elasticity is well established, by the way. 50 years of ever expanding roads only proves that traffic will expand to fill the capacity provided. Since, as you noted in the show, that there's no room to expand in San Francisco, it's time to try something different.

Fritz:

Yeah, I saw this too. In general, I'm grateful for any coverage of bicycling; even if it's not entirely favorable. It's better to be noticed than ignored.

I might have preferred to see more from Leah Shahum--who is intelligent, responsible, and leads a 10,000-member organization--rather than so much from Rob Anderson, who is, as described in the article, a wingnut. The writer actually did a reasonably good job portraying him as a lonely eccentric, and the article illustrates a real problem of our polity when such lone nut jobs can derail sensible public policies.

Critical Mass is a high-visibility event. However, its traffic impact is minimal--generally causing only a few minutes delay to any individual motorist--compared to the delays routinely caused by the automotive "Critical Mass" each and every day.

Critical Mass as a once-monthly event is also far less significant in San Francisco politics than the everyday advocacy of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, which has been truly effective at gaining significant bicycling enhancements. I hope there's a follow up on this article at some point, with more coverage of the SFBC. (Lord knows I love Critical Mass, but it's clearly lost political significance.)

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Dana Point bike lane":

Here's the explanation. The sign belongs to the new median construction contractor who was warning vehicles of the median construction and lane narrowing further up ahead. Coincidentally, the City was also installing new bike lanes on PCH. The bike lane striping subcontractor striped the bike lanes at night and then moved the other contractor's sign to the location you see it. (Not smart.)The City inspector then noticed the sign and had it moved. The good news is that the majority of PCH is now stiped in Dana Point. The striping was done in concert with the California Association of Bicycling Organizations who reviewed the plans.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "The Angel, the Bicycle and the Chinaman's Finger":

This has got to be the BEST SA movie ever!! It even beats The Gods Must be Crazy and Beautiful People in my opinion. My family have watched it over and over for years.
It was avaialable from Video stores up to about 2006 and then dissappeared. Requests to DVD stores since have proven futile. It resurfaced through MNET recently and we made a copy on our PVR. Apparently, MNET do have a copy in their archives which, if enough people pester them may be made available again in some digital format.

Incidentally, I have met Nicolas Ellenbogen the writer and director (the white unionist in the movie)in person. He used to be involved in amateur rally driving through the Sports Car Club of SA. Not sure where he is now but he is the same in real life as he is in the movie

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Dear Abby says "GET OFF THE ROAD".

Martin has left a new comment on your post "Dear Abby says "GET OFF THE ROAD"":

She is definitely caught in Catch-22 logic. Stay off the road until they build bicycle lanes, but they'll never build bicycle lanes, because there aren't any bikers on the roads.

I recently read the book Traffic, it's a great book that explores the culture of traffic, why it is the way it is, what is says about us, and what we can do to change it. It mostly focuses on automobiles, but bicycles are a recurring theme throughout the book. His conclusion when it comes to bicycles is that cycling is dangerous, because drivers are not looking for cyclists. They're not looking for cyclists, because there's not that many out there. So, the primary way for cycling to become safer is to get more cyclists on the road.

...if at the end of tv news broadcasts, the "talking heads" regularly made a little statement to the effect of"lets be careful out there folks & help create a safe environment for all those bike riders who are also commuting to work"...the message just might be better carried to where it's needed...

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Dear Abby says "GET OFF THE ROAD".

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Dear Abby says "GET OFF THE ROAD"":

Abby's logic is flawed. Her advice goes in the wrong direction. Why should bikers "wait" until something is done? Does democracy ever work like that? My experience with community governments characterizes them as primarily reactive institutions funding the needs and wants of people. What better way for car drivers to be aware of bike rights than for them to bike once a week. What better way to earn community funding for bike programs than to get more people out in numbers on bikes. Crowd the roads I say until elected officials figure out (while stuck in their cars behind a critical mass bike rally ideally)..."wow there are alot of voters on bikes, maybe we should do some more bike related programs". Millions are spent in road development and repair supporting car culture. Why can't more bikes demand the same?

P.s. I tried the dearabby.com link and it failed to work...thus I'm ranting in the comments ;).

Cheers,
Logan.

Why not register your bikes on the nes national database www.immobilize.net The police can check any property on the site. Once you have opened your account you can register any property on the site- FREE
Also why not tag the bike. The RFID tag has an unique ID number which can be read with a scanner. visit www.immobitag.com and the ciost is around $25. Details of the btag, the bike and the owner go on the immobilize website. The bike is 10 times less likely to be stolen. There are 35 different sites in the UK where the police are tagging bikes to reduce the theft rate.

So... deuxcolors says get "facts straight" but... I didn't see any facts in the comment. It was all opinion. Pipelines would seem to be facts to me. So... reckon mr. deux succeeded in being what he "didn't mean" to be.
I hadn't thought of this in terms of the "oil war" connection but there's a lot of sense to it.
I'm feeling snug as a bug in a rug with my relative independence from fossil fuels. I"m going to have to use some heat in the house, but I'm good with sweaters.
However, it seems the world around me could pretty much crumble. Okay, so far it's teh world around a few million other people that is blowing up ... but there isn't really good insulation from that... eventually...

Sadly, that's incorrect. The police, like any other government department, mostly exist to consume and expand their incremental budget.

Unfortunately, police departments don't receive the supervision they need and tend to attract little men who make terrible armed stormtroopers. At least people have a new way to fight against these unamerican fascists (their video cameras/cellphones).

A good start would be to slash the budgets of their bureaus if they are going to show that they don't have anything better to do than rough up people on bicycles (they must be poor, right?).

From the comment from (I assume) the actual guy rolling the camera: A couple of you guys have it wrong. And I'm surprised by the animosity of some of these comments. First off, Greg wasn't filming, I was. And while I'm sure that none of you are going believe me, I can promise you that I was rolling the camera, with Greg there as my producer. As we were waiting to cross the street we saw the cops run up to this guy on his bike. As they were trying to tackle him off his bike, Greg told me to turn on the camera, so I did, then he ran up to try and break up the fight. There is zero indication from anything we saw that this guy did anything wrong. That's not to say the officers are without cause, they clearly felt they had a reason to go after the man, but he certainly didn't punch an officer that I saw, and he never resisted once he was on the ground. The officers went overboard, unfortunately, and we should just all hope that justice is done.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Olympic cycling coverage.

Yokota Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Olympic cycling coverage":

I was annoyed at the Silverlight download, but Silverlight is *not* required to view the Olympics on NBC's site. The WMP plugin for Firefox under Linux works fine to view the video content. You'll get a warning message and an opportunity to "Proceed anyway" to view the streaming video.

...ah, so (whoops, sorry)...i had a different picture in my mind...

...i saw the "ha ha ha ha ha" coming from the old lady as she sat, cackling away on her little stool, happy as a lark because she not only turned away the security threat of imperialistic western visitors but she also fooled the defeatist chinese man who had obviously become their indentured lackey...

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bicycling tourists in San Francisco.

Yokota Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Bicycling tourists in San Francisco":

@adriel -- yep. We're seeing that a lot of bike capacity issues in the SF Bay Area these days.

@Glenn -- We have 9 daily ferries from Sausalito to San Francisco. The cyclists can go a little farther north to the Larkspur terminal to catch one of nearly two dozen daily ferries from there to S.F.

Or they can just ride their bikes back to the City. The Golden Gate Bridge approach is very steep, however, and the ferry is a nice trip in itself. The Sausalito Ferry takes you right alongside Alcatraz Island.
Your Bicycle Site looks interesting -- I'll need to browse around and take a look at it sometime. Any suggestions on where I should start?

Send them across the country to Long Island NY.

They can ride the north and south fork of LI and take TWO different ferries to and from Shelter Island.

I'll even give them cue sheets.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Conspiracy theory: Beijing security disguised as o....

Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Conspiracy theory: Beijing security disguised as o...":

At least that cab driver was able to speak his mind about the "security lady." I'm not sure that would have been so possible in the days of Mao.

I put the "Ha ha ha" because I was laughing at the picture I had in my mind, of the Chinese speaking cab driver ranting about the wrong directions.

I feel badly about it because I wanted to catch this race, but I fell asleep at 9:30 Saturday night and missed the whole thing! I had a lot going on Sunday anyway. It sounded like a good race.

I plan to catch the time trial Tuesday night.

I've seen it once on tv in South Africa. It then disappeared, it just vanished. After a couple of years, I tried to find a copy. I got lucky writing a pleading letter to NuMetro itself. They sent me the videotape. Now I'm trying to rip it to some decent quality. I'll let you know about it when it's finished.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on I need a faster bicycle.

Adriel has left a new comment on your post "I need a faster bicycle":

The destination is nothing, the journey is everything. Going faster robs you of more of the journey.

On and off the bike.

However the more you ride, the stronger you get, and the faster you get. If a new bike will make you ride more, then get one.

:)

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Beijing Olympic cycling: Spanish Armada.

bikesgonewild has left a new comment on your post "Beijing Olympic cycling: Spanish Armada":

...i lucked out, simply because during an early commercial break, i figured i'd see what kind of hoops i'd have to jump through to get the feed...(simple enough by adding "silverlight" which was easily provided)...so by 9:00pm i had blundered my way into the peloton...

...great last several hours or more of racing but i was pulling for the young andy schleck, kinda for all his "tour" work or the 37 year old birthday boy, davide rebellin...that guy is a quiet, solid, hard man who continually posts good results...when you look at all the guns squadra azzuri had to choose from & yet ballerini chose rebellin...wow, that speaks volumes about "faith in ability" & i'm glad to see the man was at least rewarded w/ silver...

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Beijing Olympic cycling: Spanish Armada.

Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Beijing Olympic cycling: Spanish Armada":

Good tip about Cyclingnews -- that's what KWC and I were also doing last night and I'm sure countless others. You're right that video feed has a lot to be desired. And the light audience was indeed strange to watch, almost like I was watching a well supported and televised charity ride :-)

I was really confused when I logged on last night after 11 PM and the race was well underway. That 8 PM start explains it!

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Beijing Olympic cycling: Spanish Armada.

bikesgonewild has left a new comment on your post "Beijing Olympic cycling: Spanish Armada":

...thanks to kwc & cyclodro.me, i was able to catch practically all of the 6.5 hours of the men's road race on the computer while watching the opening ceremonies on the tube...

...i would be careful to check the time on the women's rr, which is listed as starting at 11:00pm pst whereas the men's race was listed as 11:30pm pst but was actually 8:30pm pst...

...unfortunately, the streaming video has no verbal commentary whatsoever & so the best way is to use cyclingnews 'live update' which is regularly updated & then just go back & forth...

...very odd to watch something as major as an olympic rr w/ very few spectators to begin w/ & on the live feed, the only sounds are the wind, occasional mild cheering & the background noise of support vehicles...w/ not even the ratcheting sound of freewheels as cycle music, phil & paul's bantering & occasional hatchet job are sorrily miss! ed...

kwc has left a new comment on your post "I need a faster bicycle":

@Fritz: I may be skinny, but there's no one out there who's accused me of being underfed before. Also, it's rice AND potatoes with every meal.

As for the Look 596, the Storck has taught me that speed and comfort are opposing qualities, and you asked for speed :). But Boonen did look pretty happy in that Specialized commerical on his Tarmac.

Fritz has left a new comment on your post "I need a faster bicycle":

@pierre: That BMC looks hot. Even Paris Hilton would approve of that bike.

@kwc: Will the Look handle the bumpy roads over the Santa Cruz Mountains okay?

@chris: Your Surly is clearly faster than my bike. Maybe that's the one I should invest in.

@james: You've met Ken and know he's a skinny, underfed, rice eating Japanese boy. It's clearly the machinery, not the engine, that makes him go fast.

@khalid: Here's the song for you, man. :-)

@jen: I don't think I'm quite up to relativistic speeds, yet.

@curtis: Absolutely!!!
