[Cyclelicious] New comment on Steve Jobs keynote @ MacWorld.
MarvinK has left a new comment on your post "Steve Jobs keynote @ MacWorld":
OK, the new MacBook Air and Time Capsule are cool... but NOTHING else about the whole keynote was.
Google maps has been doing the cell tower triangulation on a wide range of other devices for a while. Movie rentals at $4-5/each.. I already get that on my game console and satellite TV--for similarly ridiculous prices. Not really cool at all.. especially given Netflix offer. Least cool of everything? The $20 surcharge for iPod Touch users to get applications that ALWAYS should have been there. I guess any keynote was going to pale in comparison to last year--but I thought the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Apple TV announcements weren't even worth mentioning at a keynote.
How about a G3 iPhone that you can tether to your MacBook Air (since no internal cell support)? Maybe next year...

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Merging into a bike lane is not the same as turnin....
Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Merging into a bike lane is not the same as turnin...":
Bob's argument -- and I agree with him -- is that the engineering and current law in Oregon invites right hook accidents.
People speeding 50 mph on residential streets has the same root cause -- we drive that fast because the wide, smooth straight 40 foot right of way is designed for that speed. Awareness is probably complete, and enforcement will slow people down for a short time, but those are just using toothpicks and Scotch tape on a fundamentally unsafe practice.
Passing a large truck on the right is often a bad idea. Truck drivers are probably among the most aware drivers on the road because of their significant limitations, but if you're in their blind spot, you're toast.

Educating drivers and strict law enforcement are the first best steps. Getting more drivers out of their cars and on bikes means we need to make our roads safer and friendlier.

...interesting commentary...
...this comment is not meant to be disparaging, but while i find that all the right people say all the right things, they're not the problem...
...the problem is awareness, plain & simple...all the signs, ranting whines & painted lines, mean very little until every driver gets one undeniable fact into their head...they will encounter bicycle riders daily, for the rest of their lives, on almost every road they drive on...
...it's about education, understanding that cyclists will be there, again, on a daily basis...
...infrastructure is easy to become accustomed to, signs become commonplace & all the distractions of daily life don't allow for the awareness that is needed...
...most people don't care about cyclists until we "get in their way"...

...i know you're cool, fritz, but sometimes dd's can get dangerous due to their lack of forethought or consideration...
...years ago, i was riding my mtb around one of the local lakes, on my way to an area where i could open it up a little...it's a tight, twisty, almost flat dirt road, in an area which generally has lots of hikers & walkers (ie: couples w/ kids in strollers)...not a place to do anything on a bike but chill & show consideration...
...on a very sharp, blind corner i sensed more than heard, dorky doug's brother, dummy dave, so i pulled even further to the right...sure enough, five maybe six guys, all ride pumped are coming around the corner w/ everyone over on the proper side except for dd, who is in the middle of my lane, looking over his shoulder, talking away to his friends (i think i mentioned this was a tight, blind corner, right)...
...we clipped bar ends hard cuz he was moving fast...i just put my foot down cuz i was riding slow & for some reason, anticipating something stupid but ol' dummy dave lost control, went over the embankment, over the bars & landed flat on his back about ten feet down the hill...
...his friends pulled up, several ran down to where he was just laying there seriously gasping for breath...i walked over, looked down, said "y'all right" to which he kinda croaked back "uh"...i just shook my head, got on my bike & rode away...
...there was no need for the obvious "wtf were you thinking" & several of his friend gave me that sheepish "sorry about our dumb friend" look...
...anyway, honestly true story & a place to share it...i'm not about enjoying the pain & suffering of others but i hope ol' dummy dave learned something from our little encounter...

You know, anywhere outside of Southern California and the Southwest weather is a concern for outdoor events. We East Coast natives are a hearty bunch, though, and won't let a little weather get in the way of a good ride!
Seriously, though, October in the Northeast is pretty mild - and has been getting milder recently… Not to jinx us in our first year, but I would guess that rain would be the only real worry.
And to gauge the impact of weather on a successful bike event, just look at Sea Otter. It's the rare year when the weather cooperates and it's always a great event.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Cycle Dog.
Nathan has left a new comment on your post "Cycle Dog":
warren t,
I understand your comment. I use a sprung harness device that keeps my dog quite close to my bike and the leash isn't taking any of his pressure. This keeps him close and secure without interfering with my ability to control the bike. I mostly ride in my neighborhood at night, and it's the perfect thing to burn off his excess engergy. Even when my medium sized dog does something erratic, our forward momentum is enough to minimize it, and keep us moving in the right direction.
The main thing that I see as a risk, is unleashed or stray dogs running up to us as we cruise the neighborhood. I have had to deal with it several times, and am always on the look out.
Additionally, if I ever do go on the bike path, I pull over when ever I am approached from behind or pass someone from the opposite direction. It's a courtesy that is much apprecitated.

Man, I hate to say this and risk hacking off those of you who ride with your dogs on a leash -- but I hate to meet up with people doing this. It's bad enough trying to get by pedestrians with their dogs on retractable leashes. You may think your dog is always going to be predictable ... but it isn't and someone is going to end up getting hurt.
My feeling, anyway.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Inverse recumbent.
Ed W has left a new comment on your post "Inverse recumbent":
In theory, a smaller frontal area would serve to reduce drag and allow an increase in speed, but it appears the rider is supported over a large portion of his lower abdomen. That would restrict breathing and effectively limit his endurance.
Chris Boardman's 'Superman' position was similar in that it reduced frontal area, yet allowed for better breathing.

I've been waiting for little solar options to keep evolving... saw the backpack a year ago or so online somewhere, and Larry Varney had a solar kit he used on GITAP to keep his gizmos charged.
Now, the tennis ball launcher... obviously that design was commissioned by somebody in the military or an underground group who really wants to launch somethign entirely different. A mobile version would be nice - could take care of those pesky mutts if you had good aim!

A couple months ago I saw somewhere about flexible solar panels that could be added to jackets, etc for charging gadgets. One of the examples was charging an iPod while skiing. My first reaction was that it was just crazy. I go into the backcountry to get away from gadgets.
Then I thought of self supported races like the Great Divide Race where you either need a huge number of batteries or a way to charge them. That's when I decided they could be cool.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on NYC: Huge bike boxes.
bradley has left a new comment on your post "NYC: Huge bike boxes":
The bike boxes seem to indicate that they realize the safest place to be, when stopped at an intersection, is in front of the cars. This way you don't get rear ended - the cars behind you do.
But isn't filtering through traffic still illegal in NY? On this street it doesn't matter since there are bike lanes, but it still seems inconsistent.

Fritz- I'm not a helmet cop by any means; I just thought it was an interesting headline, and bike related, so I posted it. I assumed in reading it that they counted minor bumps and scratches, hence the "duh" I inserted at the end. I look at it as a seat-belt-in-an-airplane type of safety measure: in most cases it's not gonna do much, but if it does, great. If one has their own reasons for going without, more power to them. I look forward to a Utopian future where the helmeted and non can blog together in harmony.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Lateral apical postalveolar flap.
Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Lateral apical postalveolar flap":
So generically, alveolar means "socket." The Alveolar ridge is the ridge of gum where the tooth sockets are at. Apical = "apex" or the tip of the tongue.
So apical postalveolar means the tip of your tongue touches the back of the gum ridge.
Lateral just means it sounds something like "L." Flap means that your tongue flaps up against the roof of your mouth once (versus a trill in which the tongue flaps up twice or more, so a Spanish "rr" sounds different from a Japanese "r").

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Frankie Andreu and Rock Racing.
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Frankie Andreu and Rock Racing":
For anyone watching the apparel business, Mr. Ball's (Rock Racing) behavior in the world of cycling is mild, so far. In 2007 he was sued for sexual harassment, defamation, assault, extortion, breach of contract and other charges at Rock & Republic.
Papers filed in one case refer to Ball's "criminal activities, acts of violence, court ordered psychiatric treatment, Ball's own use of a false social security number (which he presented to police upon his arrest and sentencing), and evidence that at least three different social security numbers were used…two examples of are attached hereto as arrest and sentencing report and Solis v. Ford, L.A. Superior Court, Case No. BC 228258."
Seems that all we know about Ball in the cycling world is what he said about himself in his R&R biography, "In the late '80s, Michael was considered one of the fastest, smartest and most aggressive cyclists on the circuit. The avid athlete had discovered he had the stamina to succeed at any task he took on. Michael won the LA Tri-Sprint Series and then went on to the national track rankings where he conquered the Velodrome. However, an unfortunate racing crash forced him to put his racing aspirations on hold."
Guess he's back.

Fritz has left a new comment on your post "USA energy use widget":
I took a look at it and.... apparently it was never broken. I guess I looked at the numbers after the New Year, couldn't imagine they could already be in the billions and assumed it couldn't be right so I disabled the script.
But if the United States is spending over a billion dollars a day on imported fossil fuels, then yeah, we should be in the 10 digits on the second day of the year.

...glad to see that kind of video is on the box...
...w/ the growing proliferation of people, cars & cellphones & despite the best attempts by various politico/cycling organizations, i maintain that until tv is utilized on a consistent basis to both raise the awareness & regularly remind people that cycling is a part of everyones daily life, whether THEY ride or not, we cyclist's will always remain in jeopardy...
...this kind of reprogramming of the masses would have to be in co-ordination w/ proper school awareness programs all throughout ones educational life...scary terminology but the majority of people won't embrace it otherwise...they don't see anything it for themselves...
...we all 'share the road' on a daily basis but most folks don't give us a second thought until we're "in their way"...

Darn, not much wind last night.
Left a little early to ride in the daylight (to see those limbs and estimate water depth). Mostly just a bunch of leaves on the ground.
The towns/residents appear to have cleaned up the major limbs very quickly. Bravo!

At least the Canadians care enough about their viewers to air responsible commercials. In the USA we get to watch ads that foster excessive drinking, overeating junk food, and aggressive driving.
Where can I volunteer to carry equipment to monitor air pollution here?

bikesgonewild has left a new comment on your post "Frankie Andreu and Rock Racing":
...tough call...i always felt like frankie outed himself to regain validity after the 'lance epo accusations' kinda backfired on he & his wife...kind of a "i can prove lance did cuz, ah well, see, i did too"...
...i found it much easier to rewarm up to someone like bjarne riis, a man who's admissions offered him nothing to gain but personal piece of mind (& a lotta industry flack)...
...that being said, andreu as 'team director' had his hands tied by micheal ball, a man who having put a very successful clothing biz together, assumes his business model will work in bicycle racing...who's to say it wouldn't but obviously not w/ a personality like frankie's (or a lot of cycling fans)...
...andreu was a good team player as a rider but his career has been nothing short of tumultuous since...he's not a favorite of mine but i wish him good luck...

It's just a curve around a semi-steep downhill, and the road is cut out of the hill, hence no room for a bike lane.

Terrible, terrible news.

Is that a bridge or a curve around a steep hill? I'm not seeing what's going on, possibly because I'm distracted by the pretty scenery in the background.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bike production costs going up.
Seamus Keogh has left a new comment on your post "Bike production costs going up":
There was an article in the New York Times about wages in china going up as a result of factory owners not being able to find workers who will work for as cheap as they used to. With so many people moving to the cities to find work, the factories in rural areas are having to raise wages to attract workers.
it was in the august 29th issue.
As an American bicycle worker, I am glad to see wages raising in china. The movement of nearly all bicycle production to china is based on the falicy that there is a limitless impoverished mass in china that will work for slave wages, while this is still largely true, perhaps we are starting to see the bottom. Maybe this will help bicycle production in the united states, and give all of those out of work bicycle workers in ohio a new job in an old factory.
but maybe that is wishful thinking.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know....
It rains just hard enough to get wet, and it's usually a cold rain around here so you're miserable if you're not in rain gear. I've been out on days with rain forecast for the afternoon, and in the morning all the bike commuters are in their normal bike commute clothes like nice slacks, dress shirts, and good shoes. In the evening I see them covered up in plastic trash bags with holes for their heads and arms.
