Jerry has left a new comment on your post "Caltrain fatality in Mountain View":
My biggest fear when I use to ride CalTrain was not getting hit or being in an accident, it was seeing someone use poor judgment and getting hit. In addition to the family of the victim, we need to consider the engineer, the emergency folks, and those in the station at the time of the accident. Geez.

Really I've always been a facilitator by nature, so since I'm passionate about bikes as viable transportation and most around me know it, I'm happy to help as much as possible with getting them the right bike for their purposes and tastes.
I do however charge a case of beer when actual labor gets involved. 1 case per wheelbuild and another case for helping with bike assembly. :)

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bike commuter benefit now law!.
Yokota Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Bike commuter benefit now law!":
Dave, slight correction -- many employers provide Section 132 benefits on top regular salary, instead of taking it out of the salary pre-tax like cafeteria plans. IRC 132 allows it to be done either way. My last three employers provided my transit benefit on top my salary, while the previous to that took the benefit from my paycheck first pretax.
As part of the defintion of "Qualified Bicycle Commuting Month," the code says "and does not receive any benefit described in subparagraph (A), (B), or (C) of paragraph (1)'" (i.e. the other benefits).

Okay, props to Arleigh for rejecting easier, more consumptive options, and I'm glad she's getting an Xtracycle.
I hope we're headed for a day when people won't be surprised that you can carry things much larger than a bicycle fork by bicycle, and when all cyclists will own at least one bike with carrying capacity. After all, if you only have one car, I'll bet it has space for groceries.
Happy Trails,

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bike commuter benefit now law!.
Dave Atkins has left a new comment on your post "Bike commuter benefit now law!":
I think it is ironic that the sponsor of this bill ultimately stuck to his guns and voted against the bailout...so this "sweetener" didn't even succeed in buying his vote.
I do think this is a great idea, but there is confusion over what this does. It will allow an employee to designate $20/month of their salary to go to a Transportation Reimbursement Account--as is currently possible for parking and transit at much higher levels. The employer is not going to be giving you an extra benefit; the benefit is that you can avoid paying taxes on $20/month of your salary. The government is not paying you $20, it is just not taxing $20 of your salary.
How you take advantage of this benefit, starting in 2009, is to hope that your employer already has a section 132 plan in place and that this option can be added to it. The cost to the employer is purely administrative, but you do have to get past that initial hurdle if your employer does not currently do anything like this.
I do not see where this law limits cyclists to a choice between bike, park, or transit. My understanding was that you can currently designate both transit and parking, so why not also bike?

Michael has left a new comment on your post "Bait bicycles, hidden cameras and public safety":
This reminds me of the guy who set up a bicycle and had a video camera on top of a building aiming at the area he had it set up at.
He had the handlebars just loose enough, as well as the front quick release, so that the person could ride away. However, once they put a little more strength into pedaling, the bicycle basically fell apart at the rider went flying.
Great entertainment and karma at it's finest.

They get better terms. They don't owe on that product for 30 days to 6 months. Buy now, and pay when the season is up and bills can be done.

Vicki Brown has left a new comment on your post "Caltrain hits truck in Burlingame":
I was on the 312 train. There was a small thump and then all the lights went out and the train rolled to a stop. #&*(*@ We were told the train had "hit a truck". Then we were told the delay would be indefinite and we could get out and look for alternate transportation.
I had boarded in Millbrae so I walked up to ECR, waited for a bus, and bussed back to Millbrae where I just missed a southbound train going through (the 7:32??). Then, unsure about trying to catch another train and not knowing what the delays would be, I drove home and worked from home for three hours.
I finally completed my trip to work (in SUnnyvale) at noon. Ugh.
What I fail to understand is how we have this sort of accident so often. How is it that some people are so blindingly stupid?

The tragedy is that we have known this was coming for years. James Kunstler has long been the loudest voice warning about the coming difficulties -- and his warnings are based on facts and logical deductions available to many others --, yet he has long been dismissed as some fringe kook. His rhetorical style might be off-putting to those he targets, but the facts he has pointed out, and the logical conclusions, have been unassailable. Five -- if not ten -- years after I first remember him predicting the collapse of the oil- and "creative loan"-based suburban bubble and the resulting implications for the US and world economy, the chickens have come home to roost.
This should have been a surprise to no-one. It's a failure of moral fibre that allowed this to happen. Kunstler, again, said so, and we now see he was absolutely right.

Too bad it's all about miniscule tax incentives. The only way to change a culture is to quit subsidizing self destructive behavior and to properly expense services.
First steps:
1. All highways must in effect be toll roads,
2. Raise gas taxes in order to more fully fund road maintenance budgets,
3. Enforce emission standards,
4. Federal level of Complete Street legislation, and
5. Vehicle size rules on public roads or tax vehicles by weight not just book values.
The idea that Sarah Sixpack gets federal subsidies for driving a fuelish SUV to pick up her kids from school, allowed to pollute the surrounding air, destroy the roads, and lower safety standards unnecessarily is irresponsible.

It's a baby step in the right direction. Too bad it had to get passed this way. I have to concur that $20 per month is a trifle and is highly unlikely to cause anyone to give up their car.
California's Complete Streets Act was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger on 9/30. Over time it's much more likely to encourage cycling than the Commuter Act (for Californians anyway).

Howdy--
It's a start, and maybe it can help shift perceptions, especially if large corporations use it to help encourage cycling.
I don't think it does much for me, being self-employed from home, since it specifies employer reimbursement for travel to and from work. I fail on both counts.
However, I do travel about town for work, usually by bicycle. What I need is to be able to write off my milage as an expense, mile by mile, just as I would in my car. As it stands, I would actually realize such a substantial tax break for driving, it would almost be worth it financially to use the car.
Not only should there be a milage write off, it should be equal that of a car. I realize the expenses are far from equal, but it would be recognition that taking one car off the road has tremendous social benefits. After all, corporations can earn carbon credits for cleaning up--I'd be happy to take credit for the carbon I keep out of the atmosphere in the form of a tax credit.
Happy Trails,
Ron Georg

I realize the expenses are far from equal, but it would be recognition that taking one car off the road has tremendous social benefits. After all, corporations can earn carbon credits for cleaning up--I'd be happy to take credit for the carbon I keep out of the atmosphere in the form of a tax credit.

Howdy--
That's an excellent anecdote about the bus driver, and it's something that should be included in every discussion about cyclists getting doored.
Usually, I think when people hear about the problem, it just reinforces their idea that bicycles are incompatible with cars, that we come out of nowhere. Many drivers refuse to accept that they should see cyclists in the door zone.
The idea that bus drivers are amused by door removal due to this willful obliviousness should help to alert people to their rearview responsibilities as they exit their cars.
Happy Trails,
Ron

I'm definitely feeling the need to upgrade my tail light with the days getting shorter. I'm guessing the battery on that traffic light is a little heavy though. It seems like a compound tail light (lense for distance and diffuser for area) might be a good idea.

I have the Light and Motion Solo Logic. I have the handlebar mounting mounted to my fork because of the Handlebar Bag that I ride with would blog the light. It's a great location. Nice thing about this is that it also comes with a helmet mount, so when I hit the trails in the wee hours of the morning my path is always lit. Very versatile piece of equipment.

That was kind of hte point of that montage, to show how much more bicyclists use Caltrain versus non-cyclists. He's showing traffic from San Francisco, however. From the South Bay (where I ride from) there's a crush of non-cycling passengers, probably because we have parking lots.

Yokota Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Caltrain bikes on board: Compare and contrast":
Chester, much of the anger by cyclists toward Caltrain is that they have done nothing to study what can be to increase bike capacity. The technical advisory group that wrote the draft for the Caltrain bike access and parking plan gave several of their own suggestions on improving bikes on board capacity, but Caltrain staff specifically removed those ideas before presenting the document to the Caltrain Board.
The Caltrain Board decided in their meeting today to investigate improving the bikes on board program, so that's a win.

chestery has left a new comment on your post "Caltrain bikes on board: Compare and contrast":
Has Caltrain ever discussed the cost of building in more bike carrying capacity? Have they ever talked about how much it would cost to either purchase a new bike car or retrofit a passenger car for bike carrying? Or how many total riders the typical bike car carries vs. the typical passenger car?
I'd be interested in seeing that sort of financial analysis because it would tell activists if they need to convince Caltrain to overlook short-term expenditure for long-term goals or if they just need Caltrain to accept an immediately win-win proposition.

Hey Fritz, I've been counting cyclists whenever I'm out on the bike and numbers have roughly doubled this past week. Of course, September is usually one of the better months to ride and numbers have been rising steadily for the 18-20 months I've been counting, but yes, gas shortages are getting people's attention.
I recently posted about how my corner gas station is back to normal (and noticed no SUVs in line), but there were 43 cyclists on my way home versus a typical 20 or so.

Dutch Bike Chicago location announced:
651 W Armitage Ave #1E
60614 Chicago, IL
Website is here: http://www.dutchbikechicago.com/
The site is still basically a placeholder but it says they'll be open October 18. Somewhere around then they'll also be unpacking a 40' high-cube container stuffed full of WorkCycles-Azor Dutch city bikes and Bakfiets.nl Cargobikes. Another container full of bikes and gear is apparently already on its way from Dutch Bike Seattle.
You make me proud Chicago!
-Henry
ps: I not under the impression that Velorbis is part of the Chicago plan, considering they're being heavily discounted at their Seattle shop. The very beautiful Retrovelo's will almost certainly go to Chicago though.
