Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Eurobike Friday news":
I don't want to detract from your Eurobike coverage, which is fascinating because I have no money and can only dream, but I do want to discuss your comment about the knog marketing.
You know, that knog advertising is more mainstream than most bicycle advertising. They're not selling a bike product to a cyclist that can't wait to replace the bearings of their headset with the latest plutonium-alloy ball bearings or pick up the latest Formula One-inspired bottle cages.
They're selling bags and clothes. Fashion accessories. Accessories that you wear on a bicycle. Compare it with any fashion house website, like Prada. You'll find similar imagery.
This leads me to a long rant (don't worry, I'm going back to fark.com after this). I think most bicycle product advertising is missing sex appeal. As we know in these United States, sex sells stuff. How many custom framebuilder websites does one see with pictures of a bike leaned up against what looks like a post-Katrina garage door, or an overweight male in his 60s perched precariously over an extremely well produced custom lugged steel frameset? Or Specialized/Trek/Giant/etc. with pics of bikes against a high contrast abstract background, with the bicycle to be sold as some sort of Platonic ideal? You think that's going to move product?
This knog website, with the girls making out and other images of both swarthy men and sultry women isn't weird marketing at all - this is what moves product in the rest of the consumer fashion sphere.
I might be drunk right now (it is Friday night and I'm home early from the pub), but I'm positively sure that only after a 15 year period of bike manufacturers and retailers using adverts that feature attractive men and women using bicycles in mostly undressed fashion will we in these United States see the desire for bicycle transportation become truly mainstream. I base this on my belief that it's foolish to think forcing guilt upon the American populace for expelling invisible carbon gases will make people get out of gas guzzlers and into healthy forms of living.
People buy gas guzzlers because they're insecure about their individual image and think that peers will think better of them and their sexual prowess because of the ownership of a vehicle that, to many, is a cultural display of virility. This isn't just SUVs, I'm going to include two door automobiles above $30,000 in this and four door automobiles above $40,000.
People don't buy bikes because they think only health nuts or children ride the two-wheeled deathtraps. Elevate the bicycle to the level of a 'must-have' accessory, like a Prada handbag or Hermes scarf, and introduce that same level of exclusivity, and bicycle sales will take off. The only way to do that is to market bicycles and their gear with statistically underweight men and women (or triathletes) in revealing -designer- clothing. Package it as a sexy lifestyle choice. Look at how cars, Abercrombie and Fitch, and rock and roll have been sold. Even Dell uses attractive models in skimpy outfits to unveil its new computers.

Alright, I'm done. Thanks for the coverage, Fritz. I'm going to go drool over that SRAM red powerdome now.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bay Area Tour de Transit.
Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Bay Area Tour de Transit":
Jack,
Caltrain has a dedicated compartment on each trainset that can carry up to 32 or 16 bikes, depending on the car.
California Amtrak commuters and the Altamont Commuter Express also have bike compartments. ACE can carry up to 34 bikes per train, depending on how the train is configured. Amtrak commuter trains have dedicated room for 3 bikes per car.
Here are photos of the Caltrain bike cars:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bike/148817469/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bike/177117821/
Santa Clara County light rail has bike hooks. Each train has at least 4 and up to 8 hooks in it. Cyclists can also store bikes near the doors if the hooks are full so max realistic capacity can be something like 16 bikes per train, depending on how many cars are on the train.
Here's a photo of my bike on VTA light rail:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/bike/266597211/
BART permits bikes on board (with some restrictions), but there's no dedicated bike storage for the bikes. You just bring them on board and hold them in the aisle. Here's a photo of a bike on BART that's pretty typical:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/turkisdach/174257061/
I avoid taking my bike on BART -- it's kind of a pain in the neck because the system is very heavily used.

One of the biggest complaints about the law is that out of state drivers (there are a lot, District and Maryland residents) are exempted from the high fines because they are allowed to plead ignorance. The roads right around the District are nasty to drive in, but there are already a number of programs to encourage people to report "aggressive" drivers. Maybe there just needs to be more effort to track down the reported aggressives.

I read that one reason the VA legislators voted for increased speeding fine was because they were afraid to increase gas taxes by roughly a penny per gallon. the measure is meant to increase revenues for roads, as you've noted Fritz, but the legislature is tax averse.
Now we get to see how much backbone they have when confronted with angry voters.

I agree. The bike shop I go to doesn't have the best prices. They're a small chain with three stores in the area. Locally owned, they're in tough competition with a huge super mega-store that's a nationwide chain with huge stock and a snazzy-looking service desk.
At the end of the day, though, my little shop, although the bikes cost a little more, but they give you more for the money. When you buy from them, you get lifetime free labor and discounts on all parts and accessories. They're also a little easier to convince into giving you emergency service with the help of a little bit of beer ;)

Swap the flipflop for a set of hub gears; add lights; some mudguards/fenders and maybe a chain guard. Then you can call it a commuter bike.
On that front, I'd like to add some deep V rims - just so that I can add some patches of 3M "school bus" yellow reflective tape.

But seriously, it honestly looks designed for most-weather riding... most-weather *on purpose* riding, not "well, we stuck fenders on in case you got caught in a rainstorm so you don't get the stripe," but stuff put internal because it's *going* to get wet and you might not want to clean it all off every time. It also doesn't say "steal me! steal me!" ... it says "ride me! Ride me!"

Ride me!"

It's great that a major manufacturer is embracing a practical city bike...but this GF show bike is nearly a direct rip off of a Kogswell (down to the color!), which is a clone of a 1940s French porteur. What's old is new again...

That is almost the bike I am trying to build out of seconhand bits and pieces. I live the big front rack.
I amazes me how much you can actually carry on a bike. The other day, while out running some errands with my partner on our bikes, We decided that a couple of beers in the sunshine would be the ticket for the afternoon. The panniers engilfed a whole case (24 stubbies) of beer and were transport up the hill to home.

This is exactly the type of bike I would buy for running errands around the neighborhood. Something that you just hop on to goto the store for some groceries or what not. Lock it up and not worry about it. My road bike is good for commuting back and forth to work (30 miles round trip) but it's less then ideal to go to the market. It is just asking to get stolen.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Overland Park transportation and bicycling.
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Overland Park transportation and bicycling":
I used to work in OP. It's been a few years, but I definitely had the feeling that cycling was not within the realm of most people in the area. Having moved to that area, I was surprised by how much the local roads look like LA highways.
I haven't lived in the KC area for a few years now, but I did see that a study was issued that KC is one of the least bicycling cities in the US. I don't know if they included OP in that study, but bicycling just doesn't seem to be in the cards for those folks.

Three CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms:
1) Dooring is NOT the most common bike/car crash. The left-turning car clipping the opposite-direction bike is the MOST common.
2) NOBODY, cops included, is using rear-view mirror.
3) If bikes are allowed the FULL use of traffic lanes, wat up with da bike lanes? Suppose SF just lose 'em!

Is tire a one syllable word, indeed. It all depends on exactly how you manipulate that R phoneme in your mouth. (Consider the southerners, for whom tire would rhyme with far - like the three wise men who were scorched 'cause they came from a-far.)
Depending on the dictionary, "squirrel" is sometimes considered the longest one-syllable word, just in case that comes up in a trivia contest... or in a baiku, since squirrels happen to bicycles, too.
I remember discussions about this stuff with my reading specialist buddies and then we'd snicker (well, some of us would) because it wasn't as if our students could hear the difference between tie - er and tar...

I live one block off Metcalf right where the new construction project is under way. There are SO many alternatives to riding on Metcalf that I never even considered using it for bike transportation. Between 83rd and 103rd you can use Lowell. Between 110th and 51st, Lamar is wonderful. Both Lowell and Lamar are wide enough that other traffic can get around you easily. I ride Lamar for ~30 to my Dad's and ~ 30 blocks back every Sunday and I've only had one incident where an elderly lady rolled through a stop sign forcing a quick stop.
Sure, I guess some bike facilities would be nice, but I don't think they're really needed.
A note about the Indian Creek Bike/Hike Trail: The construction at 103rd and Metcalf is taking out the part of the trail that ran under Metcalf. They have placed bike detour signs up both east and west to direct you to the crosswalk ACROSS Metcalf. I really recommend getting off the bike to walk it across and KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!!! They've added some pavement to join the sidewalk and path on the east side.

Noah has left a new comment on your post "Overland Park transportation and bicycling":
I like metcalf south of 143rd street. It's pleasant, has a shoulder as big as most (pathetic) bike lanes out here, and people are used to seeing bicycles on the road. Any further north of that and you're in for a surprise. I've never ridden on the parts of Metcalf that they're talking about -- and for good reason! I've ridden on some parts of Metcalf that were out of my comfort zone, but only once in the daylight. The other time was almost midnight and there was no traffic to speak of.
I agree, though. Metcalf is a huge problem. I, myself made some passing comments on the state of suburban Kansas City's love affair with arterial roadways. The goal seems to be to make them wider, faster, and use them to make sure there's an interstate-accessible mini-highway within half a mile of anywhere.
The end result? Six or eight lanes of traffic with a posted limit of 45 (or sometimes 55) miles per hour, actual speeds averaging 50-60 miles per hour, and some people pushing the pedal for little 70 MPH jaunts between stop lights. Metcalf isn't just hell for bike/ped traffic. It's hell for everyone, including businesses and residential areas within half a mile either side.

I've invented this a thousand times... or at least wished it.
Now for a "horn" that will do assorted sound effects. When my brakes were really squeaky, people knew I was there!
How about something to hold a lipstick so I can beautify myself while at a stop light?
Seriously, I think some major brainstorming could come up with some major improvements for utilitarian cyclists. Cycling products tend to be focused on fair-weather recreational cyclists.

Jboy has left a new comment on your post "Overland Park transportation and bicycling":
i know this area quite well as it's been my stomping grounds for the past 5 years. i think something that is always missed in discussions such as these is the fact that road condition and bike lane absence or neglect is only part of the equation. Drivers attitude and knowledge is a major factor. Like it or not KC in general is not very bike friendly in this regard as well. You could have a small group of riders obeying every law and rule possible, the farthest to the left as they can - and Mr SUV will freak out because he has to be a few precious moments late to his destination....
This has become so clear to me as i have recently relocated to the mecca that is Boulder.. Drivers (even those that apparently don't ride) know how to drive with cyclists, and don't worry or mind it either. Of course there is bike lanes or wide & swept shoulders just about everywhere, but still...

Dear Fritz,
Your follow-up was greatly appreciated and an accurate summary of my post. I wrote a letter and sent it in response to a few emails I recieved yesterday. I will format it as a "Letter to the Editor" that will not "retract" a statement I never made but explain the statement I did make and what it refered to. The quote is not only inaccurate and out of context; it is absurd. I am concerned about the negative publicity this will have for a city that has been committed to cycling promotion and safety. But, I am most concerned of about cylist safety and how this distorted statement might potentially negatively influence that.

As Chairperson for the Saratoga Traffic Safety Commission I want to apolgize for allowing any words I have uttered to be so misunderstood and misquoted. This quote is so outrageous as to not even be believable, but I guess we all tend to believe what we read. My quote should have read "that" road which refered to a discussion about one road in Saratoga in particular whose conditions are dangerous for all vehicles in many places. This road has a long history of accidents, community concern and media attention. At this same meeting we later discussed bike lane safety for which the other quotes in the article refer to. I have worked for many years WITH cycling through the commission to add biking lanes, sign appropriately, Safe Routes to School and promoting biking and walking as an althernative to driving. I have always worked diligently to have families bike to school and have been involved in most of the design work in our cities attempt to renovate schools and inmprove traffic in around them to promote safety. I, of course, do not think this awesome sport is insane nor idiotic, and where else would anyone bike if not on the streets? Parking lots! The misquote came from a differnt discussion in the same meeting where we addressed one address on one street. I do reserve the right to have an opinion about one very dangerous road in my city, knowing full well that it is within the rights of all bikers to ride where they want when they want. Thank you,

I wonder whose frame that is and what Ritchey/ITM/Selle Italia think of their components now being in WM.

Thanks for the post; cool video. It would be nice if they'd include something along those lines in driver's education courses. I've had 3 kids go through driver's ed and none of them have every gotten any information on how to drive around cyclists. I'll try to remember this link for the next 2 kid sessions.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on SFPD bicycle training video.
Michael has left a new comment on your post "SFPD bicycle training video":
A few criticisms:
1. San Francisco Police Officers - not that good at acting.
2. "I'll catch up to the motorist, you catch up to the guy on the bicycle." simply means "I'm going to stop up here, you go ALL THE WAY down the street to get that guy". He was greedy by taking the easy catch.
3. When the police officer catches up to the guy down the street, if you look further down the street, there is a car parked facing the wrong direction. I know in many cities that is an offense that can be ticketed.
4. "Bet you coffee" is illegal gambling. The police are not setting a good example.
5. At 6:16 remaining, there is obviously a car with it's hazards on in the bike lane.
6. At 4:56 remaining, you can clearly see the same car parked illegally in the street.
7. The cyclist who was intimidated should have kept what was thrown at him. A littering fine would add insult to injury.
8. The girl hit that hit the car is wearing a microphone on her sweatshirt. Seems sketchy, maybe she's working undercover for the SFPD in some type of insurance fraud scheme.
9. When the group exclaims "Bikes Belong In Traffic, Share The Road", they are obviously taking up the entire road. This can create an unsafe environment for all and is probably illegal.
In all seriousness, it's a great training video for SFPD.

Yahoo Answers suggest morphine is quite a painless way to get off. Hey, maybe the guy shoulda throw a going-away party so the rest of us could enjoy the food and fellowship?

paul has left a new comment on your post "Suicide is no solution":
OK fritz, sorry if I sounded preachy (which in hindsight I did).
Self-medication certainly isn't healthy, but many suicide victims use drugs or alcohol (just a legal drug) to anesthetize themselves before the act. I can't pretend to know what was going on in the guy's head, nor can anyone, but blaming people with depressive syndromes for committing suicide is the same as blaming people with cancer for dying from tumors. Death isn't necessarily the outcome of either disease with good treatment, but sometimes good treatment fails and no treatment almost always does.
I'll get off my Penny Farthing now, it's just hard when you have lost people you care for.
I do enjoy the blog immensely.

Thank you for the balancing comment, Paul. Rest assured that I have very personal knowledge of depression and the debilitating effects of that disease.
The guy who jumped in front of the train was stupidly drunk. No doubt he, like many people, attempt to treat themselves with alcohol and other drugs as well as sex and bad relationships.
I was selfishly angry when I posted my note. If you try to find happiness in self-medication and codependency and find yourself miserable, don't jump in front of a train -- go find help. Today.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Yahoo's company car.
Allen Tom has left a new comment on your post "Yahoo's company car":
Yahoo is a very bike friendly employer, and actively encourages its employees to find alternatives to driving to work solo. We even have super friendly bike advocates on staff to help newbie bike commuters map out and plan their trips.
I usually bike+Caltrain to work from San Francisco, and Yahoo allows me to have flexible work hours, and also provides a nice hot shower with towel service when I get into the office. Even though I have my own secure bike locker on campus, I usually just park my bike at my desk, and wheeling my bike up the elevator and through the office is perfectly acceptable.
We have incentives where cyclists can earn free meals and movie tickets just by cycling to work.
On the days when I might not feel like cycling, I can hop on one of the free employee shuttles that run to and from San Francisco and my office in Sunnyvale. The shuttles are even equipped with WiFi and run on biodiesel.

Paul has left a new comment on your post "Suicide is no solution":
Your amazing ignorance of Depression is obvious. It's not uncommon but obvious. If someone is willing jump in front of a train, then a relationship was probably just the trigger and something deeper was going on. Clinical, long term depression is becoming more common, or at least recognized more frequently. Unfortunately public knowledge is slower to catch up.
Read William Styron's "Darkness Visible." It's less than one hundred pages, and will shrink your ignorance and increase your knowledge.

Alex Killby has left a new comment on your post "Signs of the times":
If the government put all the money that's going to Oil towards renewable resources of energy (solar, wind, hydro-electric) we'd all be set. Even Nuclear would give us hundreds of years of power. But instead, all of the tax dollars are going to the war for oil.

I'm surprised about Google, thought they'd be the first to update something like that, with all their advanced street team and not-so-corporate attitude. Guess I thought wrong.

There's a funny cartoon about the power outage at ITGumbo. I don't know what it has to do with Harry Potter, but maybe you'll figure it out.

it seems that conservatives in general lack empathy and the ability to abstract to be funny. sarcasm is as close to their use of irony as they can muster, ending up using the mean little brother of satire.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bike shop blues: It's too hard to buy a bike.
Warren T has left a new comment on your post "Bike shop blues: It's too hard to buy a bike":
Part 2 strikes too close to home. Every single time I've been waiting on a bike I've purchased to come in (twice) or am waiting for them to finish a repair (four times) I've called several times and have been told that the bike isn't in, or the repairs haven't been completed. I'll finally get fed up after hanging up from the last call and will drive right over to the shop where , without fail, they'll bring the bike out and tell me "Oh, yeah, this one has been ready for a week."
