[Cyclelicious] New comment on Ahp00k is faster than Fritz.

SiouxGeonz has left a new comment on your post "Ahp00k is faster than Fritz":

Somebody in C-U has locked their Fuji in a tree. The third time I rode by, I said, "I must go back tonight and take a picture of it!"

Then I clicked on *something* from the link to ahpOOk... knowing I was switching from Bikes to Politics. That led to a reference to somebody's blog at the U of Illinois... which had a picture of a bicycle in a tree.

Then I decided I'd better take my own picture instead of swiping hers, tho' I haven't yet.

And it wasn't even the same bicycle after all. It's actually locked into the tree here... and it's a brown Fuji. I checked 'cause when I saw her pic. was of a blue bike I thought *maybe* it was one that got swiped.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on More urban fixie video fun.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "More urban fixie video fun":

oh god....i can't even imagine riding like this, no car would tolerate it. cars barely tolerate me when i get in the left lane to make a turn. or when there's a single lane and i have to make a left turn. these are the jerks that fly past me when i actually stop and look both ways at intersections, they make all cyclists look like jerks :/ it looks cool, but i dont think it promotes healthy cycling. those riders actually make me a little angry. they're like skateboarders, but in the middle of the street!

and yes i ride a singlespeed/fixedgear track bike. because it's simple and quiet and i like the idea that i can fix it if it breaks. and the handling is good for a little girlie like me.

These guys are cutting off cars and pedestrians like assholes. A prime example of why the rift between cyclists, pedestrians and cars exists. As a mechanic, I can say that most likely will not make much difference whether it is on or off. However; I will say that it wouldn't hurt in the case of a kid to leave it on. A right side dump, common with kids when they don't use a kickstand, or prop up the bike, will likely bend that hangar inward and you know whaere that will lead!

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Pedal powered snowplow.

SiouxGeonz has left a new comment on your post "Pedal powered snowplow":

I do understand that you want new perspectives (hence my comment that I wouldn't want to exclude anybody).

My confusion starts when transportation bikes are defined by what they're not, somehow. "In contrast to cycling enthusiasts like myself though, the average person who may just be starting to entertain the thought of bike commuting to save money or reduce their carbon footprint, isn't looking for a hard workout or a personal best time to the office. ... They don't want or need a trickle down version of a racing bike; they are looking for something that is specifically designed to meet their transportation needs- a bike that is easy to use, comfortable, and efficient, but also fun."
"Trickle down racing bikes" are a recurring frustration ... but probably much more so to currently practicing practical cyclists than the ones who haven't done it yet.
Granted, just like a musical instrument, the entry level instrument of choice is different than when one develops skills and specific tastes... so are you looking for an "entry level bike to learn on?"
Like an awful lot of folks, I don't think bike design is what keeps the masses from riding, and I'm not sure why their/our needs would be different from current practitioners of practical cycling. It's an interesting thought, though! The cognitive equivalent of those little fret stickers that go on guitars to tell you where to put your fingers for each chord - can we do that for a bicycle?
And how about that OnStar?

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Pedal powered snowplow.

SiouxGeonz has left a new comment on your post "Pedal powered snowplow":

Non-cyclists in the bicycle design contest... okay, I wouldn't want to exclude anybody, but IMO too many people are designing and marketing bicycles without understanding the users' situations and needs.
I was speculating about one of the hugest problems with bicycles: their "sort of" portability which means they're too big to put in your pocket or backpack... but small enough to be too easy to rip off.
I want "OnStar" for my bicycle. Just like those ads, I want my wristband to tell me "Your bicycle has just been moved, and you have it in 'park' status. Would you like ONStar to activate the Stinky Squirtseat now?" at which point the seat would spew the contents of the little optional bag for riders who have issues with bladder control upon sudden stops.

...re: burnfromwithin & billy may...

...therein lies the dichotomy...

...billy may, your concept seems quite brilliant & at a glance, i see it as basically an extension of our own organic visual process...

...from a business standpoint, you probably chose one of the best companies in the world to market your product...beyond earning you a decent living (& i honestly hope you'll personally make a fortune on your idea), you may be providing a 'tool' that creates a safer cycling & running environment & which could ultimately save lives...

...that being said, i would think you're intelligent enough to grasp the p.o.v. that burnsfromwithin is coming from...

...personally, as an independent thinker, i don't really worry about being 'milked' by corporate america, as you suggest, although there is a calculated approach that companies like nike employ...& there are plenty of folks who base their spending on those huge campaigns...

...if i'm interested in your product & what looks to be an intelligent concept on the surface, i'd research it & if it truly fits my needs, then i'd buy it...

...not everyone thinks in those terms, & huge corporate advertising budgets bare that out...& nike is egregious by their presence...

In addition, many of the dollars spent to propel this vehicle will be used by terrorist organizations with stated desires to inflict harm and possibly death to my fellow citizens and family members."

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Receiving stolen property.

cezar has left a new comment on your post "Receiving stolen property":

Pulled it from google
=========================
Here's what happened to me. I bought a bicycle and went to jail for 4 days. Last week I bought a bicycle from a guy at a garage sale at 16th AND VALENCIA, the bike was a hundred dollars. I thought the bike was a great deal, the bike was nice, but didn't look very expensive. The guy looked like the original owner, his clothing matched the stickers on the bike (yes it sounds silly but he gave me the impression he was the owner). I bought the bike and figured i could make a few bucks on the bike, so I posted it on Craigslist. The original owner saw the bike on Craigslist, 2 days after it was stolen (the day I bought it), and called the SF police department. The original owner saw the bike and told the police he saw the bike posted on Craigslist, he said to meet at his job and I did. When I arrived the police arrested me, without listening to my story, and threw me in jail. The police ignored what I was saying and said yah sure we hear it all the time. I was thrown into 850 bryant the local jail here in San Francisco. Jail is awful, it's a terrible place. The food is a smear of peanut butter on wax paper, with a couple of slices of bread, 2 packets of jelly, and a few small cookies. And a kindergardener size milk. I was starving the whole 4 days. I lost 10 pounds, and was severely depressed and was suicidal. My cell mates was a person with 7 counts of terrorism, and 1 count of stalking, a dude who was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, a crack cocaine dealer, and a dude who took assaulted 7 black guys with a baseball bat, because he didn't like the color of their skin. These are not quality people, this experience was hell. My bail was $15, 000 dollars and my friend were not allowed to visit me.

Jail is a hard place especially if you have never been there, imagining staring at 4 walls 24 hours a day, no books, no music, no television, nothing, only a cellmate who farts all day, and stinks up the cell you are in. My cell smelt like cat piss, and butt.

You have no rights when in jail, I was thinking how could this happen to me. It happens to people all the time! People get locked up because owners see people riding their bicycles and call the police. This is the 2nd highest rated city in the USA for bicycle theft. If you are thinking your bicycle is not stolen, you are probably wrong. Sellers lie, why tell the truth?- people will believe anything you tell them, they have to, most buyers in SF really need a bicycle and can't afford to buy a a new one, so they buy used.

Especially if you see a bicycle that is looking brand new, or close to it, it's probably stolen. The street rate for a bicycle is $40 to $200, when it's super hot (just stolen). Why risk it, don't buy these bikes, jail is a horrible place where you can easily get stabbed with a toothbrush shank, or any item a prisoner can use, do you want to die? I don't, and I will never buy a bike used again.

Here is where you can find the stolen bicycles:

Craigslist, you'll see these people do postings everyday, same background in their picture, same type of ad, these people, some of whom, may have no idea the bicycles they have are stolen. Some guys "fix up" bikes, i did, I bought bicycles form Craigslisters and from flea markets, and thought the bikes had a clean title, I repaired and re-sold them.

"Oakland Coliseum swap meet", has only stolen bicycles, so if you are looking here is where they are. Thieves in oakland mostly illegal mexican immigrants steal the bikes and run them here early in the morning, you'' see these short people, with brand new mountain bikes, and $1000 road bicycle, and you can buy the bikes from these guys super cheap. I heard stories from random people saying that they scour San Francisco, Berkeley, and San Jose for bicycles and go around in trucks with bolt clippers and hacksaws in the middle of the night and get to work, some of whom strip the paint off bicycles, re paint quickly and re-sell the bikes by morning.

"Laney College Flea Market" the place where there are usually about 50 bicycles on any given Sunday, ranging from $40 to $800, most are super cheap, for a quick sell.

I am done with this, I learned my lesson, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on A few of my favorite things... Part 2.

The Stouts has left a new comment on your post "A few of my favorite things... Part 2":

The leaching was actually a problem before I started using conditioner . Since I've started doing so and applying as stated it hasn't been a problem at all.

I'm thinking part of it might be that since I don't ride with bike shorts and ride longer distances regularly this way, more perspiration gets to the saddle and leaches the dye, as opposed to a cyclist wearing padded shorts for longer rides, or street clothed rider doing shorter distances <8-10 miles. I checked with Brooks customer service and they confirmed this and reccomended more conditioner to help reduce the problem

Thats when I spoke with Rivendell and and ordered the Obernauf's and tried the application method from my friend who'd done military time. The two combined has resolved the problem.

I think you are using too much leather conditioner. The conditioner is leaching out and bringing the dye with it. The purpose of leather conditioner is to replenish the tanning oils that dry out over time. A little is necessary but more is not better.

4. Trader Joes ("bourbon vanilla" is the secret ingredient in vanilla

I never did get to Jackson Playground, Alamo Square Park, Bow and

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bikes and train tracks?.

Yokota Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Bikes and train tracks?":

@Pete - I guess that's the challenge of trolley tracks -- you ride parallel to them, increasing the risk of falling in.

@Anon 10:30 - I agree, I don't worry so much with my fat tire mountain bike ;-)

There's a pretty nasty RR crossing on Hwy 9 in Santa Cruz County. The tracks cross the road at an oblique angle, AND cyclists approach at a downhill and around a curve so you hit the tracks fast and while you're leaning through the turn. Signs give advance warning of the crossing.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bikes and train tracks?.

I live in Philly, and we have trolley tracks all over the city. Crossing them at near right-angles is no problem, of course. But when riding in the same direction as the tracks I would fall if my wheel fell into them. So I simply stay away from them when traveling in the same direction. But one day I'm sure I'll make a mistake and fall because of them.

As I understand it, you have a technique to avoid a fall if you ride into them ( going in the same direction)?

I'd love to see a video of that. It could be a face saver for me.

Tracks are a hazard, but they are one of many. I've gone down on them, but not very often, and usually I was laughing sheepishly as it happened because I knew better; it's almost always the result of being in too muuch of a hurry and not paying enough attention. I must say though, that tracks are one reason to really love 2.35" tires. I am truly spoiled in that regard. Val

Oh yeah, absolutely -- wet tracks require lots of extra caution or I might end up uʍop ǝpısdn.

I'm kind of a "risk averse" person so maybe that's it too. What to me seems like normal caution might be the mark of an ultra-cautious weenie to others.

I think crossing tracks at too small an angle is a mistake every biker is probably going to make once, and then learn from. I got this one out of the way as a kid!

I'd tend to agree with you, except, of course, when said tracks are wet. In those cases, even experienced cyclists can go down, and quickly, as I found out to my surprise and horror one morning on Market St. I was very lucky. These days I'm a bit more cautious around tracks.

Federal Bicycle Commuter Bill Passes
Commuter in bike laneThe federal bicycle commuter tax provision recently was passed into law recognizing bicycling as a major method of work commuting trips. Set up like existing tax incentives for commuting by transit or parking your car, this act provides an employer tax break of $20 a month to reimburse employees for bicycle commuting expenses. Some examples include the purchase of a bicycle and bicycle improvements, repairs, and storage.

The act takes effect for tax year 2009 beginning January 1.  We will share information on how businesses can begin implementing once the I.R.S. issues program details. Thanks to everyone who contacted your congressperson to request this program.

Support Protection for Colorado Trails

http://bicyclecolo.org/page.cfm?pageId=875

Bicycle Colorado joins IMBA and the Outdoor Alliance in urging Colorado mountain bikers to support strong Roadless Area protection. This effort preserves important open space which allows human-powered recreation opportunities. A proposed Forest Service rule contains too many exemptions for development, impacting important mountain biking trails. Areas of focus include Hermosa Creek, Monarch Crest, Rabbit Ears Pass and more.

Distinct from designated Wilderness, Roadless Areas are important for mountain biking because they are accessible and open to a variety of sustainable recreational pursuits. Your support is vital to ensure the character of Colorado roadless areas remains intact.

Take Action! Tell the Forest Service you support strong protection for bicycle-friendly Roadless Areas. The deadline for comments is Oct. 23.
