[Cyclelicious] New comment on iPhone, Web 2.0 and the wetwear interface.

Alex Killby has left a new comment on your post "iPhone, Web 2.0 and the wetwear interface":

You must have had so much fun there. Unfortunately way up here in the North, the two closest Apple stores are in Toronto - 2 hours away.
I find it difficult to find interesting blogs on the Internet, so I thought that watching Shooby's feed for the line-up would at least involve me a little bit in what was going on at the Palo Alto store - woulda been there if I could. Not to mention, I bike every single day - something I enjoy alot! We just got an indoor Velodrome in London here a few years ago, and it's really an awesome experience, have you ever had the chance to use one?

To be fair, it is somewhat buried:

"The term "pie biter" probably refers to a rider who agrees to block a stronger rider in exchange for a share of the purse."

Not to take anything away from him, but the fact that he conducted himself with grace was likely as much about self preservation as anything else. It probably kept him from getting lynched.

My Taco Bell and McCrap both told me they are not allowed to serve cyclists thru the drive up for insurance reasons. Their insurance policies apparently won't cover me if I get run over by some jack ass in a humvee - but I would be covered if I was in a motorized vehicle. I can walk up or ride up to the drive up window at the bank - they could care less. If I want fast food I go to Super Sonic. They have order windows I can walk up to.

I would only consider it a problem for a pedestrian to use the drive through at a bank, when there is also an ATM available for pedestrians. I think it has something to do with how people feel like it's extremely important to follow rules (stated or implied). So much that the feel it's their duty to make sure everyone follows the heard. I think of them as the border collies of society.

My wife is a big time rule follower, when we are in a line she gets really uncomfortable when people don't follow the line etiquette. I always ask her why she is in the line in the first place. There isn't a sign instructing her to stand in a line why not just crowd your way forward? She then gives me a look like "if you don't shut your mouth right know I'm going to kick you in the balls!" Which usually keeps me in line, the comfort of my balls are more important to me then questioning societal norms.

IB Rich has left a new comment on your post "Walking up to the ATM":

Fritz-

Nice job pointing out something about our culture I hadn't really picked up on.

A Burger King drive-through refused to sell me food back in college because I had walked up (the main indoor dining area closed much earlier than the d-t). I remember being shocked that they would turn down a sale simply because I was not surrounded by two tons of steel.

Ed-

I would assume that McDonald's wouldn't refuse service to a guy on a motorcycle (also not an enclosed vehicle on 2 wheels), so it must be the presence of the engine that makes you a desirable customer. I wonder if an electric bike would be OK to them? If not, what about electric cars? Is it a safety issue in their minds? I don't get it.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Text of the New Jersey QR Bill.

Tim Jackson- Masi Guy has left a new comment on your post "Text of the New Jersey QR Bill":

The problem is that the bill language is very, very ambiguous. In two locations it seems to exclude specialty adult bicycles and then in the ammended section it seems to add them back in. Nobody at the New Jersey assembly seemed to know what the answer was. One staffer at the office of one assembly person believed that the "lawyer tabs" on the fork would be sufficient as a "secondary retention device"... but that he was totally unsure and was also seeking clarification on the point, as he'd taken countless calls about the bill that morning.

What we have is a proposed bill that is vague and ambiguous at best. The language that gets me was the part about retention devices that are "not yet commercially available". WTF?

At first read, it would seem that the bill excludes adult specialty bikes, but the language is self-contradicting as you read further along. Suffice it to say, it makes sense to call and urge folks in New Jersey to oppose the bill.

With her "Field of Dreams" philosophy--if you build it, they will come--Ellen Fletcher is a model of determination for bicycling. Other than experienced and determined bicyclists, most people prefer riding on streets with bike facilities. Period.

Donna T. has left a new comment on your post "Top bike theft cities":

P. Squiddy - you are absolutely right - more bikes = more theft by virtue that there are more bikes to steal. This is why theft numbers are so high on college campuses, too. There are a ton of bikes on campuses around the world. Thieves know this and target those areas.

You are also right that a lot of bikes are not locked or not locked properly. That's the whole point of doing the list - to draw some attention to what can happen if you don't lock and lock properly. Anything that gets people thinking about securing their bike is a good thing. We want everyone to keep what is theirs and just piss off thieves all over the place.

Fritz - thanks for helping to pass the word about properly locking!

We are like soup or soup ingredients. We rub off on each other, even if we are unique. I try to be curry instead of tofu in the mix :-) Whether it's The MEdia or Your Momma, it isn't in current fashion to do things because it's right. I believe there's an undercurrent of fear that we really can't afford to do that; that there really isn't enough to go around, so if we share, we'll end up with Nothing 'cause we're the sucker. (Okay, I recently read The Road in preparation for GITAP's Velosophie, which is a pretty insipid, too-long book but that's one theme... and in the soup it has rubbed off a little on me.)
Unlike soup I can resist it, though - but that soup is also an arteryin the bloodstream of life, and it's best to resist in ways that don't activate the antibodies of fear that make others surround you with white blood cells and nullify you...
FDR was right. We have nothign to fear but fear itself. That fear really can take us down. Fear not to simplify.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Amoral bicycle commuter":

Too true... driving in a two-ton energy consuming beast so as to save a bead or two of sweat is serving the devil of civilization. Too bad DOTs in every state have already sold our future to these demons.

The only way civilization will wake up from this stupor is through skyrocketing prices and much unnecessary suffering.

Before I came here I commuted from MD to WETA in SHirlington, every day. Loved it ... flahsed my "go everywhere" pass to get from two blocks from the house to the front door of work (tho' it helped to have a brother who worked out the transfers).
An hour-long one-way commute also means a 35-minute one on the cycle doesn't even begin to be "a long time," even not factoring in the pleasures of it.

As Gillian said, there are so many good things about replacing driving with biking.

A favorite while passing a line of cars in traffic, is the inevitable SUV that squeezes right as a blocking move. It's so simple to slow, weave over to the left, pass, and give a nod.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on How to paint a bike and other useful tips.

danielo has left a new comment on your post "How to paint a bike and other useful tips":

I'll play the Devil's advocate, regarding suej's comment, because I think the argument could use strengthening.

The comparison of semi v. car and car v. bike is a spurious one. In the first case, MASS is the varying factor. In the second case, MASS, SPEED, and VISIBILITY are at play.

The MASS variance in the two cases might comparable, if you consider a fully-loaded semi v. a Geo Metro and an SUV vs. a bicycle. If you had to subject yourself to one of the two collisions, which would you choose?

The SPEED variance is a big issue, and directly affects the degree to which the MASS issue plays in. With not only a mass difference between auto and bike, but also a much higher speed difference, you have a much higher probability of physical damage.

Many cyclists go out of their way to have lights and reflectors all over their bikes. Even these highly-lighted bikes are less visible than a small car.

And on a final note, it's one thing to consider a car vs. a semi, but what about a BICYCLE vs. a semi? All the above factors are multiplies several-fold in such a case.

My response to the "it's laws of physics; get off the road" argument is (like yours, assuming that's you) a: do you travel on interstates? When tractor trailers cream sedans, do people say "the sedan should get off the road?"
and b: if somebody says "you should get out of my way. It's just a fact: I can kill you if I want to." I might get out of the way... but if I'm somewhere with a functioning legal system, I'm going to file charges, and when that somebody is out of *my* way, I'm going back.
Does he have kids? If a kiddo in that kid's class takes his lunch money because he's big enough to... I suppose his kids are going to be those big kids, and he thinks that's fine. It's just logic.
