Emo has left a new comment on your post "Bike shop blues: It's too hard to buy a bike":
I've got to agree. I am loyal to "my LBSes" (yeah, I play the field a little) but am not always thrilled with the way they treat me. Sometimes all is great, but sometimes I get the "don't make me explain this to you" treatment. Or I run afoul of some sort of cycling orthodoxy and am accordingly chastised.
It disquiets me in part because I know LBSes (some anyway) are or could be imperiled by the Internet and the big-box stores. So why aren't they trying just that much harder to keep my business? (All this goes for independent bookstores too.) We need and want to support our local economies, but we also want that to be a pleasant experience.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bike shop blues: It's too hard to buy a bike.
Fritz has left a new comment on your post "Bike shop blues: It's too hard to buy a bike":
As far as "how to talk to newbies" Shimano sent bike shop people to the cosmetics counter to buy makeup and stuff. I don't know if that helps or not -- one of those seminars on speaking and thinking positively might work better. The owner of my LBS gets noticeably grumpy and defensive sometimes.

SueJ has left a new comment on your post "Bike shop blues: It's too hard to buy a bike":
Bike shop people often have social skills issues; they work better with bikes (or cardboard) than they do with people. On the other hand, the better salesfolks are less likely to be bike geeks... so they'll know less about the bikes even though they might sell more of 'em.
Bike companies would do well to address some "how to talk to newbies" issues and "how not to totally alienate people without really trying," except that even thinking about what that session would be like hurts to think about. I prefer working with the guy who knows a lot ... but then, it's harder to insult me - I'm notoriously dense...

I got one a few years ago it started with a pulled groin muscle while playing in a racquetball tournament, which I felt a wonderful burning sensation for a few days. A month later on thanksgiving day I played some touch/light tackle football and felt it pop out that night. New Pain. Sounds like you might have a moderate hernation or had one for a while. I still get twinges from mine at strange times even after it was fixed 7 years ago. Mine got so bad that I'd have to spend an hour or two a night awake from the pain and pushing it back in....:) That was a painful month between it happening and surgery.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Melancholy hernia.
Tommy Williams has left a new comment on your post "Melancholy hernia":
I had a right inguinal hernia when I was 21 or so but I never felt any pain at all and I have no idea when it happened. I just noticed that I could feel something soft and squishy in my, umm, inguinal area. At first I thought it was a tumor. Turns out that was a bit of intestine that was poking through a rupture in the muscles of my lower abdomen.
The type of hernia I had, though, is not due to strain but due to the way the abdominal muscles form as a baby. It tends to show up in the late teens or early twenties.
There's this at the Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/inguinal-hernia/DS00364
But whatever it is, I recommend seeing a doctor if the pain continues.

It's all so...so...bad. I'm at a loss, really. I want to believe so badly in pro cycling. I've enjoyed the Tour this year more than the last couple. But, this is harsh. Maybe he did it, maybe he didn't. I have no clue. BUT, what I do know is that everyone touting the 'system' as working is wrong. No matter whether he did or didn't, he deserves to have his B sample tested without people knowing who it belongs to. Do you think there is anyone in France, much less the lab, that doesn't know who has a sample coming??? How is that not biased testing? Now, I'm not implying that it would change the test, but it is still a flaw in the 'system'.
Ugh. Makes me so SAD.

PAU, France - Tour de France rider Alexandre Vinokourov tested positive for a banned blood transfusion after winning last weekend's time trial, prompting his Astana team to pull out of the race.
The positive test of the Kazakh rider, a one-time favorite to win cycling's premier event, dealt a heavy blow to a sport already reeling from a spate of doping scandals.
"Vino has tested positive having to do with a blood transfusion and the team is leaving the Tour," team spokeswoman Corinne Druey said, using the rider's nickname.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Tom Danielson at the Mount Evans Hillclimb.
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Tom Danielson at the Mount Evans Hillclimb":
I was a spectator at the Hillclimb today and can confirm that Danielson and Moninger were flying up the hill in an unnatural fashion. The winning time, however, was about a minute slower than his record. Second fastest time ever; buzz in the group that riders from Rocky Mounts team gave Danielson a 'lead out'on the early flatter portion of the climb, an effort which left those riders completely spent. Wonder if they were paid for their efforts?
One of the highlights today was watching the top juniors sprinting up the hill past a line of stunned cat 4s.

I was a spectator at the Hillclimb today and can confirm that Danielson and Moninger were flying up the hill in an unnatural fashion. The winning time, however, was about a minute slower than his record. [Cyclelicious] New comment on Tom Danielson at the Mount Evans Hillclimb.
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Tom Danielson at the Mount Evans Hillclimb":
Today I rode (slowly) the Mt. Evans Hillclimb. Danielson and Moninger went past the "citizens" group as if we had all stopped. Tom was leading with Scott hanging tightly on his wheel. I dont yet know the official times for either man but given the mild temperature and non-existent wind, I'll be surprised if the Tom's record time is not shattered. Both are amazing riders and I am very pleased (and humbled) to have been part of this event.

Interesting that you mention Sinkewitz's case next to the anniversary of Floyd Landis's amazing breakaway win on Stage 17 to Morzine. Ironically, Sinkewitz was the last man Landis dropped on his way to victory that day. And now they have both tested positive for testosterone.

The data is greatly misleading and materially misleading. According to the website, a store which is 1.6 miles away by sidewalk is only 0.18 mile from my home! The distance is true as the crow flies but not by sidewalk or road!!!! My neighborhood is surrounded by highways and the pedestrian paths have been eliminated.

I did a little digging, and it turns out Trilby did not found Lundberg Survey Inc. Her father Dan Lundberg started the company, and her brother Jan Lundberg took over when he died. After Jan left the company, she took over. Jan has since become an outspoken environmentalist, and has battled with his sister over custody of their aging mother. He describes her sister as "a servant of major oil companies" and accuses her of "yank[ing] a home out from under family members by supporting the liquidation of the property." No word on her consumption of combustible cocaine derivatives though.

"She is the source when the media needs information about oil and gasoline retail marketing and trends."
Ok, so we are to be surprised when she says we should buy more gas?
It's like people are surprised gas prices has gone up when we have a President and Vice President who have come from the oil industry.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on No dope = slow tour.
brian has left a new comment on your post "No dope = slow tour":
Certainly possible, but I think we would see slower speeds later in the race rather than the first week. The dope doesn't necessarily make the riders go faster, but allows them to recover quickly.
The initial slow pace has more to do with boredom than dope.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Bicycle Orange Beach Alabama.
Tim Jackson- Masi Guy has left a new comment on your post "Bicycle Orange Beach Alabama":
First off, I have to point out and agree with James; there are a@#hole drivers everywhere. Hell, I was never once hit by a car growing up in Alabama... but I've been hit far too many times here in Bike-Friendly California.
And, yes, riding in Alabama can be some of the best anywhere. I grew up near Orange Beach. I've been on Perdido Beach Blvd many, many times- my grandparents kept their boat in Orange Beach. I rode countless miles from my home in Fairhope to the old Civil War fort, Fort Morgan. The round trip, via country roads, was nearly 140 miles (when I was 14-16 years old). I can honestly say, it still remains some of the best riding of my life. One of the highlights was crossing over the Intercoastal Canal Bridge. That thing went straight up and straight down. The view from the top was awesome... and the descent was hair raising!
My dad still lives near Birmingham, about an hour north, and I spent summers with him and would ride the wonderful country roads there. Again, as good as anything I've ridden out here in SoCal. I honestly would love to go back and ride some of those old training routes again- even though I'm not nearly the same climber. Many of those roads were nothing but hills.
I'd love to see more comments from current Bama riders. How are things there these days? I have to admit, I haven't ridden back there since probably 1988. I'm sure things are at least a little different now.

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Cyclists' guide to firearms.
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Cyclists' guide to firearms":
Personally I carry a Glock 17 legally. My trouble is finding a real way to hide the gun on the bike and still have it accessable.
Frame bags have openings on the wrong side. Saddle bags and panniers are awkward at best to reach into when moving. Been thinking about a handle bar bag, but they are in the way and most seem to be meant to be opened from in front of the bike.
Any one here have a real suggestion? The only "on the body" option would be a fanny pack.
One more thing, I have practiced drawing and shooting from the back of the bike. It's awkward, but a skill worth practicing if you ever need it.

Get FSA's new carbon assembly compound. It is a grease-like substance that keeps your posts from slipping and prevents corrosion at the same time. This is the only product from FSA that I have really liked. In fact, I find myself using it on anything that could slip (stems, bars, bolts, pedal threads). The stuff works great!

[Cyclelicious] New comment on Pollution filter for cyclists.
Ed W has left a new comment on your post "Pollution filter for cyclists":
The filters would probably flow enough air when they're new, but I'd wonder about it after going through a few duststorms or even a good, soaking rain.
But there's a bigger concern - just how do you drink when you have one of these things? It looks like you'd have to remove it entirely. Now here in Oklahoma (which is an Indian word for 'this place is only a mile from the sun, dammit!') hydration is a serious issue when the temperature an humidity are off the scale.
Oh, there's just one other question - where can I get the rest of the Star Wars storm trooper uniform?

Fritz, I went to the Chicago Bicycle Film Festival last year and saw a compilation of (outstanding) short films by Lucas Brunelle. Some time ago, I was reminded of them and tried to find him on YouTube and on the web, but couldn't remember his exact name or how to spell his last name. Thanks to this post, I now found him on the web and there are about 10 of his videos on YouTube. You should see his bike.

You're just doin' this to mess with me 'cause I bit on that STR piece! Well, I'm not fallin' for it. Not me. Nope. Ain't gonna happen.
(Well, maybe not this time.)

So, that's why you've neglected the contest. You've been waiting in line for an iPhone.

We've still got these folks that, I believe, in-your-face confrontation isn't going to help:
this guy ... I'm not sure what will get this guy out of "roads are made for cars." I mean, otherwise sensible people honestly believed for years that "women just can't... (fill in the blank)" or believed in spontaneous generation, for that matter.

Alex Killby has left a new comment on your post "Crime and perception":
No Kidding. I bike to work every day, and it amazes me how many motorists seem to think I shouldn't be on the road, and push by with little to no room left for myself, occasionally causing me to run off the road. Our city by-law says to ride in the middle of the lane if you feel you don't have enough room. Maybe I should try that...

Hmmm... which direction to "push back?" Global ferocious enforcement for all the violators, or global ferocious focus on the benefits?

I'll look through the files, Fritz. I know I did an informal count of motor vehicles stopping/not stopping in front of the library one afternoon. But I won't have it until this evening, at least.
